Nothing. I knew I would own a Miata some day 12 years before life allowed.
for me...
1989 Supercharged MR-2 - never could find any in good shape
E36 M3 2 door - only the high mileage models were in my price range, and I don't like the idea of buying a BMW with 100,000 miles
I also looked at some used motorcycles, but decided against it.
What about you?
Nothing. I knew I would own a Miata some day 12 years before life allowed.
I with you Titus. My dad bought his first one in 94' but I wanted one in 90'. I had to wait until 99' to buy mine. It's been a big part of my life for 11 years now.

I was looking at fun li'l fwd coupes & hatches. NX2000 (the egg), Sentra & 200SX SE-R, Civics of course. I also had a taste for the SVT Contour after test driving one in '00. Was rather turned off by the not-so-great service records I'd dug up, though.
All of that to find a beater to drive while I finished up on the next round of changes to the boosted wagon...which I sold a year after buying sammm's '92. Oops!

I had a 3rd gen Supra before I bought my Miata.
Lately I've been going over a HUGE list of cars, trying to nail down what I want next, and I keep coming back to getting a 2nd Miata for some reason.
Been considering everything from older MR2's to 4th gen Mustangs to building a budget hotrod, but I think I've pretty much settled on another NA.

I'll join the Titus-Sharpie band wagon.
Wanted one since working at a Mazda dealer in 1993. Wasn't looking for anything else.
Had to wait only four years though.

Other threads list all the cars I've had including a RWD Fiat in the early 70's. Great car when it ran . . . the rest of the time, I spent waiting on parts.
When I saw my first Miata in 90, I wanted one. I was with my bro at a car show, and he said, "I thought you learned your lesson on the Fiat." I explained that nobody named Tony would be involved with a Japanese car; it would be reliable...think Datsun.
Fast forward 10 years through a Citation, GTI, Cvic, CR-V and 79 Ford van and I finally bought my Miata. Never stopped wanting one. It just took a while to eliminate gf's with kids.
New Beetle, but then I chose the second most gayest car.![]()
^^ If they were more reliable I'd have one already just to freak my friends out even more![]()

I always wanted an Austin Healey 3000. In 1989 I started reading everything I could find on a new car soon to be introduced by Mazda. In August 1989 I put $1000 down just to get on a list. I'd say it was a good decision.

RED RULES!
90 Miata, 04 Rubicon, 05 Boxster
Way back when I got my first one in '95, I had a plan to move up through successively nicer cars to get to a Corvette or a 944 Turbo. After I got the Miata, and especially once I installed a turbo, there didn't seem much point. I still wouldn't mind a C6, but there aren't many cars within 3x the price of a Miata that I'd really even consider as a reasonable alternative.
When I bought my miata, I was looking for a dependable, reasonably priced, rear wheel drive, manual transmission car that got close to 30mpg on regular gas, to drive over 50 miles each way to and from work. I didn't have a whole lot of choices given those criteria.

In my case the Miata was actually my 2nd choice car.
I had a twin turbo '93 RX-7, which was fast and fun but ridiculously unreliable. Since I was a full time student (with a wife and a mortgage), I couldn't continue to justify having such an expensive weekend toy. So, I sold the RX-7 and bought a '99 Miata so that I could have something cheap, fun and reliable to race. I ended up keeping that Miata for five years (longest I've ever owned a car), and it went from being my weekend toy to daily driver, because I kept leaving the daily driver at home.

I wanted either a Suburban or the Miata. hehe
My dad and I went to test drive miatas when I was 14 in 1990. I still have the brochure from the 1991 special edition BRG that I got at the dealership in 1991. lol I also have a bunch of Car and Drivers and Sport Compact Cars form 1990-1993.
I wanted a Miata to autocross. Took me a few years to find a cheap enough one. I just bought a Tahoe last week. So here are my two new cars. haha
