what does everyone else use as an AV? is the freebie microsoft AV any good? Or am I better sticking with my Norton Corporate, which is free...
Trying to clean a 'security suite" infection from my other laptop.... I don't even remember clicking ok to anything in the last couple days
Norton is a piece of shite. Annoying thing is, i was going to back up all my info this week so i could wie and reformat the computer as i do every few years. ugh.

as i read into it, i know exactly where i picked up the infection. beware if posting on craigslist...

Avira is decent. I'm not fond of using antivirus programs though... stay away from Russian porn sites![]()

I picked up that same malware Saturday night. I was at Yahoo and trying to watch the video of Mariano Rivera plunking in the winning run. It looked like media player started and then stopped, and then the browser (Chrome) froze up fora few seconds. Next thing I knew it was trying to run that 'Security Suite' BS.
Re-boot and bring up the task manager early (CTRL-ALT-DEL before the malware crap loads). If you can get to task manager you can kill the bogus processes. Then install Malwarebytes if you don't have it, update it and run a full scan.
I run AVG (free) for anti-virus.
not 100% sure, but i had a pop up for a java update while trying to post something to craigslist. I accidently clicked without reading because i was trying to post an add. no other sites were open. in fact, here club roadster, and the pointy boards are the only other places i've been...

i rebooted in safemode and ran malwarebytes last night. just a pain in the ass. appears to be clean now.....

Anywhere that has popup ads or adds embeded in the page is a potential source of infection.
I use trends home internet security suite. Worth the price of admission. It has stopped those types of problems multiple times.
I think the fact my laptop has been running like a dog because it is time to swipe everything may have helped circumnavigate the virus. If this laptop booted as fast as my Asus surf, or had silent and quick-boot enabled, i'd be even more pissed. I'm surprised Norton never even caught a wiff of it.
When did this virus debut? Within the last couple of days?

Could this be the "Here You Have" virus that started making it's way around via email late last week? If you got an email from a friend that had a title of "Here You Have" or "Just for you", and you clicked on the link in the email, then that is your source. One of the things the virus does is send it self out from your email to all your contacts.
Mine was definitely not email related. Here's what is was and how to remove it -

Adblock Plus in Firefox can save you from a lot of the crap that gets snuck on to otherwise "legitimate" ad services by blocking the frames where those ads would have appeared...

Thanks...looks like it's available for Chrome too.

I'm not. Last year Secunia tested various suites, AVs, etc. for their capability of catching zero-day exploits. Norton caught 20%, everything else only caught 2% or less.
I just don't use windows on the internet anymore. I only need it for my audio mastering programs anyways for my studio's purposes.

When this happens I just scan the person's hard drive from Linux on my laptop. Works every time
Good to hear you were able to rid yourself of the issue!
When I do have to use the internet on windows (mostly games on Steam) I use AVG Free, Zonealarm Free, and Firefox with AdBlock Plus.
Windows 7 is now being targeted more because people are "forced" to use it. My laptop caught a zero-day 12 days after I bought it. Re-installed windows and immediately dropped norton for the programs noted above. Not a problem since, but I have done most of my web stuff on Ubuntu..

Ugh. I got caught up in this crap last week as well. It grabbed my email account and sent everyone in my contacts shite about viragra, cialis, yada yada (hope I get a commission). Only way I think I got it was when an Adobe update popped up and I idioitically clicked on it. Thinking back, Adobe upgrades usually only pop up when I'm opening something in Adobe. I use Norton and am going to shitcan it and find something better (thanks for the recomendations).
Kersplatizan porn sites > Russian porn sites BTW...
i'm quite sure this was not email related. By the way, i am running firefox with adblockplus.... i think i just managed to get screwed, lol
