Default HTC Hero vs. Windows 7

I was under the impresion I could plug a USB between my HTC Hero and my Portable and tether an share the phones internet connection when I was not near my wireless networks.

Is that something that can be done??

Windows 7 in Devices and Printers shows a Android Phone is conected to my portable but shows it as Catagory : Unknown and Status : Needs Troble Shooting

    TIA

all depends on the carrier as they mod the os to match what they offer. iphone is the best example. you could tether is on other carriers but not att. when att opened up tethering they make you pay for the use age.

Sprint has said they don't like tethering even if you are on their "Everything" plan: LINK

    Just 10.......

I don't really need the capability that often but this week I'm headed to Charlotte for meetings and it would be nice to have.

    Going to try EasyTether Lite.

I don't know about how sprint handles tethering weather they block it, but since you said you have an android device, go download an app called PDANet to your phone. It should talk you through installing on your pc and pretty much handle the whole process.

I'm on tmobile and I used this app as my primary home internet connection for 6 months at a time when tmobile didn't like tethering either. Worked great.

You need to install it as a modem and add the right int string. Do you have the drivers?
    M3 is always the answer.

I have no idea what most of you are talking about.... But the EasyTether Lite is working well enough that I can post this post!

I tether with my phone (Android 1.6) using the free app PDANet. It also is supposed to allow tethering via Bluetooth on newer versions of android.

For windows I use PDANet with my brother's phone. It works but isn't always reliable. (haven't used it lately so that may have changed)
We have AT&T and they 'don't like' it either.

I have an old LG Vu that I just plug into my Ubuntu Acer netbook and it just works without installing anything extra. Gotta love true mobile internet

Isn't bluetooth tethering a little slower?

FYI - my brother-in-law is an EE and came up with the bluetooth concept while he worked for Motorola's cellular division long before it was invented. He wrote a paper on his concept for bluetooth (which he still has) and submitted it to his former employer to file a patent. Motorola did not think it was worthwhile filing a patent for it at the time.
