I would look at Hamilton, seiko diver watches like the orange monster, Oris, Tissot or look at some smaller boutique stuff like lum-tec and tw steel.
A decent grey-market Tissot can often be had in the $500 dollar range. Its about the cheapest way to get a ETA automatic movement. My wifes Tissot has been as reliable as my Seamaster and still looks quite nice. The Tissot's tend to cheap out on the bracelet and don't do any re-working of the movement, but hey its generally the same movement.

This thread has reminded me that I need to send my grandfather's IWC back to schaffhausen to have it rebuilt.

The vintage IWC's are not stratospheric in price like their current ones (well except for the pilots watches). Mine is a (off the top of my head) late '40s steel Cal.88. Similar to http://cgi.ebay.com.hk/Excellent-IWC...-/250709769950 but with stainless hands and no applique numbers.

Here is a photo of the other watch I have had since high school. I am the second owner. It was first purchased in 1939 for a friend of mine, by her mother.

If you were as slow as me, you wouldn't be afraid either.

thread-bump - +1 on the Citizen EcoDrives. I have the Calibre 8700 and get compliments all the time. Its the one they are advertising on the Eli Manning comercials lately, even though mine is 4 years old. :)
