Thread: I fell off the wagon....

  1. #1

Default I fell off the wagon....

and bought a 1985 Beretone (Fiat) X1/9. It had been parked for two years (the gentleman had a stroke that weakened his arms and parked it), so I put a new battery in and changed a couple of the fuel lines that had dry rot, put 5 gallons of super unleaded in and sweet talked her for 1/2 hour and she started up. The interior is clean, but the clearcoat is flaking. Just a tad of rust in no critical areas. Everything works.

The 1st and 2nd gear syncros are shot, but it came with a rebuilt transaxle. I covertly drove her home under the cover of night.....

I need to find some good tires in 185/60/13...

    One more project....

$1020. It was on ebay, so I bid on it and emailed the seller to go look at the vehicle. Well I get over there and the car is structurally solid and he had said that it was good prior to parking, so I asked what his reserve was and if he would take that if I purchase tonight. He said yes and down the road we went.

    Me and my small cars....

One of my co-workers kept sing "fat guy in a little car" referencing the Chris Farley bit in Tommy Boy.

Then he called for an intervention.....

    Dude!

Those are nice cars - I had one once upon a time.

Keep an eye on the coolant tubes that run from the front radiator to the mid engine. They have a habit of rotting out. Then you dump your coolant and cook the engine.

    You're tempting me...

TC and I know where there is an origional owner Datsun 260Z that's been parked for a long time that would go for cheap. Structurally, it's good, but needs a lot of TLC (new interior, new paint). OK... a full up from the ground restoration...

I know I don't need another money pit, but it's very very tempting...

Also if it has AC then the pully is really weird. THe thing splits in half so that you can install the belt. At least thats how my hazy memory remembers it.

So do you think that the white spots on the black paint is just oxidization? Will it buff out? Is there anything you can do to fix the clearcoat from peeling? Its still dirty, and it was too cold to do much more then just spray it off.....

Spare rebuilt tranny came with the deal...

The carfax makes me believe that these are original miles....

    Will this buff off???

I'll find out.. I know it need a quarter panel replaced (which he's got) and the interior is probably worn as it's been sitting around for about 5 years.

I think the motor may be in a couple peices?

If nothing else, he may let it go real TCB like.......

Congrats!!! I think the spots will buff out...just get some 80 grit paper and a belt sander. Might want to touch them up with some Krylon when you're done with the sander.
