Since the thread got locked.... Check with Jim Drago at East Street in Memphis. They compression check and go over their used motors. He also builds/races spec miatas at the national level. Well respected.
$450 delivered for the last one I purchased. FYI JDM 1.6 is technically not legal for STS.

under SCCA rules, you may:
1. rebuild an original motor as delivered in a car in the USA using OEM or OEM-equivalent parts and following factory guidelines (head shaving, clearances, bore, etc); or
2. buy a complete replacement engine from Mazda USA designated for use in the USA
hence, even if the JDM motor is the same, it is technically not legal because it was never delivered in a car in the USA

in my tiredness I did not see this thread get opened. Thank you guys for the input, I have sent emails to the suggested locations and will go from here. I want to get this car all sorted out and I am going to make it to many more AutoX this year than last.....and that should be easy since I can count on one hand how many I got to attend last year.
I learned this the hard way.....
Take all of your valuables out of your car at night. This includes taking the mounting hardware off of your windshield or dash and hiding the power supplies. I lost over $ 1,000 to a thief with no hope of recovering my items and to top if off they smashed my window in the rain and my truck got soaked. Let my loss be your learning experience.
