I think the socket and motherboard BIOS set your CPU limitations. Check your MB doc.
I built a computer a while back (2007 maybe?), and I'm looking to upgrade the CPU. I currently have an ASUS P5b-e motherboard with an E6300 1.8 GHz Core 2 Duo. I can just swap CPUs right? I found this one: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16819115056 on Newegg. I should notice a nice jump in performance going from 1.8 to 2.9 right? Any other suggestions for CPUs? If there is something out there almost as good for less $$ that would work too...
I'm interested in upgrading because I'm pretty sure my CPU is holding my 8800 GTS video card back. I've fiddle a bit with overclocking and that seemed to result in higher frame rates...

what he said.
At first look the socket and FSB look OK, you need to check the Asus website to see if it supports it in the BIOS
