Thread: What'cha do?

  1. #1

    Default What'cha do?

    How do ya get paid?.

I'm a delivery courier and college student.

Before that, I was in the IT industry for 8+ years as a support consultant for numerous companies around Dallas and Los Angeles. However, the IT industry isn't as good ($$$) as it was in the late 90s and likely never will be that good again.

I decided to go back to school for a degree in education and do something I'd enjoy. Looking forward to having summers off!

I actually love my job. I love not being stuck in an office all day and when I'm on the road, there are no over-bearing bosses or annoying co-workers to deal with. I'm basically my own boss.

As a bonus, I have tremendous employment benefits and good job security with FedEx.
    ...and across the line.

i work in the corporate office of the container store.
i occasionally get to travel to help out with new store setups and remodels of older locations (headed to rockville, md, on monday for the start of a remodel).
i've been with the company for a little over five years. i started working at their addison location on belt line, transferred to the galleria location when addison closed. spent a couple of years in the distribution center in three departments, and moved into my current spot last september. the job has gotten me on tv once and in a video for fortune magazine once, as well. strange, since i'm not exactly photogenic...
great benefits for a small, privately-held company, and absurdly nice coworkers.
i was previously a benefits auditor guy for wyndham int'l in the nymphomart near downtown dallas. before that, well, i was in college running the campus radio station, so i have way way too much music lying around.

I'm a delivery courier and college student as well, although I deliver pizzas instead of packages.

I'm only 31, but I've had some pretty varied experiences. I was a student pilot for two years (private license and intrument rating, although I haven't been up in over five years and don't have a current medical), then when it became clear to me that I probably would never make much money as a pilot, I left school and went to work for a small advertising firm. I worked there for a number of years, putting money away, knowing I wanted to go back and finish my degree. I was lucky enough to do some aggressive investing in the late '90s that paid off well, and in late '00 I followed through on returning to school full time, starting over basically from scratch (only about 10 hours of my previous classwork transferred to my new degree program). I'll be graduating in May from UTA with a Bachelor's of Science in Mechanical Engineering.

Now I just need to line up a post-graduation job.

I'm a Systems Engineer for Cisco Systems. I work with the resellers to make sure they can sell, design, install, and maintain our gear. I'm focused on security products and cover 2 1/2 states. Keeps me busy! Any free time is taken up with extra projects such as a book I'm writing. ARRGH! First deadline is here!

Prez of a manufacturer of custom electronics for a variety of OEM applications. Largest markets are in food service equipment. We do many of the controls for automated cooking systems used by Mickey D's, BK, Taco Bell, KFC, A&W, many more...

BEST part of being the boss... an '03 Shinsen as my company car, (4th Miata). 2nd best... I can take most any nice day off to enjoy it.

My job does require quite a bit of travel. I can often drive, so I know every back road from here to California, and in most every direction. Have GPS, Will Travel.

I do software integration for cell phones. Specifically, OS integration and multimedia codecs for our line of applications processors. Most of the stuff I deal with is on Symbian.

Look for us in a cell phone near you:

Work for a high speed industrial print system manufacturer. I do production and prototyping for systems from EBI to UV Inkjet. It's actually alot of fun and quite interesting most of the time. Then my part time job is working at Motorsport Ranch, the money there is not big but the benefits are great(free track time!!!!!! ).

Self employed here. Somedays I'm loaded, most days I'm not. (this is true of money and ). I've got a couple of small companies, Arlington Computers & Gallup Properties. So I can sell you a computer, a network, or possibly a house.

I am also a Private Pilot without a current medical (went and got myself grounded, for real ). Another hobbie of mine is sailing of which I enjoy racing sailboats as much as I do Miata's. I've even got a Chysler Mutineer that I need to restore and get ready to race. I'd already done this if I hadn't found Auto-Xrossing a while back. Now, I find the time to restrore the boat limited.

I work for a playground manufacturer down in Mansfield. I design playgrounds. Got some going in in Germany, Italy and Sicily at the moment. I'm stuck at a CAD station and they never let me out! Like TurboDuane, I use to race sailboats (C-15's) before getting hooked on autocrossing.
What's left of a '96 Miata with stock clutch.
My car exceeds my driving ability. That's the only possible explanation.

No I don't. I support the mainframe Operating System(s) software, not much on the Application side of things.
