Thread: Overheating!!!!

    Unhappy Overheating!!!!

    99 Miata.
I overheat in stop and go traffic with the AC on.

I had Track Dog Racing put in a PWR Aluminum Radiator (no change), front and rear sway bars and a two hoop Roll bar.

I put in a new water pump (no change).
Both fans run just fine. And it dose not overheat at 40-80 mph.

So at this point I am lost.

    Any ideas? I am out.
P.S Thanks to the guys at Track Dog Racing! The Roll bars look great!!!

my 99 with pwr has problems just getting up to temp. you may have a water flow problems. would look for a dead rat in one of your hoses then replace you tstat, it might be stuck closed. removed main hoses and see if something is restricting.

Search the forum for some of the issues related to relays and fan motor speeds. This issue has come-up a lot lately, and most times it seems to be electrical, not internal or mechanical.
I would also check and test the thermostat. The new radiator has more cooling capacity, but can't help much if the water isn't flowing well, or the fans aren't turning fast enough.

"fan motor speeds"- I did not know the fans had more then one speed. I will look in to it. Thanks

First, I willl take out the thermostat and see if I have better flow. If not, I may use a water hose to flush out the stoppage.

Do you know what PSI the water pump pushes. My be use a air hose and blow it out.

by fan speeds, I mean that I've heard reports of old fans that work, but are very weak and aren't really pushing much air. Be sure you actually test the thermostat if you pull it out (hot water), since some cars wont cool properly with no thermostat (water moves too fast too cool down in radiator). I also used to use the old American car "no thermostat" trick to run cooler, but many modern engines don't like it much. If all else fails, call Rogue.

Best way to see if the fans are good is to run an amperage check on them Mazda has a spec.

    4.5 to 6.5 amps

When you say it overheats is it puking antifreeze or is the gauge pegging H??

The gauge is on its way to H, when I turn off the ac and turn on the heater to cool it off fast. It is " puking" but only in to the over flow tank under the hood, then it suck it back in to the motor when is cools down.

So no A/C no overheat issue??

I'm still thinking fans check amperage and see what ya get.

Thanks for the compliment. Glad you like the roll bar. Give me a call at the shop on Monday and I can try to help you out. -William

I would agree with the fans. It only gets hot in stop and go but not a speed. I have had 2 cars do this and both times it was the radiator fans. One it failed completely. The other was the 94 Miata we used to have. It's main fan was just not blowing as strong as it should. Replaced both fans with SPALs and did not have a problem.

At this point it's the fans. The thermostat is GOOD. I flushed it out and put new fluids in it. Monday is the test in traffic. And buy a tester.

Ok. I got the new fans on today ( I had no overheating probs this winter, LOL). I got the*Mishimoto MMFS-MIA-99 Fan Shroud Kit ( it fit 98% of the way, 2 of the bolt holes where off by 1/4 inch, and I needed longer bolts). So now all I am needing is some temps in the 80's and 90's to see if this will fix the prob. P.S I did try the amp test but I am more of a light tester kind of guy, so I melted the tester. : (

The Mishimoto MMFS-MIA-99 Fan Shroud Kit. Did a good job. The needle never got past half way.

I have seen a car with one of the two fans wired backwards that caused it to overheat and the AC to not work very good.

I was actually working on Neon for my friends daughter, she had recently bought it and with the weather warming up her complaint was the ac did not work very good, so I hooked up the gages and low side was good, high side would start good then just keep climbing, it was driving me crazy, thought it was a possible blockage in the condenser until the engine cooling fan sped up and it started getting real hot on my leg and I realized some bozo must have replaced the cooling fan and wired it backwards. Switched the wires and like magic everthing was back to normal. It was more a lucky catch, had I not been standing in front of the car, I was getting ready to start pulling the lines off the condenser.
