Two feet off the ground and his wheels don't break off on impact. What was wrong with the first guy's car?

The first guy's car had both front uprights fail. The uprights were a new design for the team at the time. As Buemi gets on the brakes the brake torque feeds from the discs through the calipers and into the uprights. Both uprights instantly and catastrophically fail in reaction to the load from the brake torque, shedding not just the wheels but the entire upright assembly on both sides.

Speaking of lucky drivers... I nominate Nico for a lifetime supply of clean underwear courtesy of whoever makes his favorite after his little flight during free practice this morning...
