    Electrical nightmare on 1990 miata

    Hi,

I had a small accident and since the accident I get no response when I turn the ignition key to start.

I checked the battery and get 11.9 volts at the terminals and 11.65 at the starter.

I hot wired the starter from the main electrical connector to the solenoid and the starter does turn over.

I did check the clutch switch but I get no current to the switch.

I also took the ignition switch out of the steering column lock and checked it for conductivity and it seamed good in all three positions.

I have looked at both the Haines and Chilton manuals and they so no relays in the circuit. But I and thinking their must be one because the the switch for the clutch is about a 16 gauge and the wires coming from the ignition switch is about an 8 gauge. I did take the switch after and cleaned it before testing it also.

As a quick fix I also bypassed the clutch switch. ( I not so stupid to leave the clutch and start in gear!!!)

Oh I doubt this matters but the radio (factory sometimes does want to turn on but if I keep pushing on it eventually does stay on.

I love this car I help my Dad by it from Mazda after it was the long term car and driver test car. It’s number 91 of this first production year.

Yes I did check the fuses already too.

Oh, the accident was very minor no body damage just bent wheels and lower control arms.

Please any ideas........ I and at a loss!!!

    Thanks,

    Chris

I just can figure out where these two different size wires are connecting.

Miata Wiring Diagrams might help. Probably not a bad idea to invest in a Mazda Factory Service Manual either. They have the best wiring diagrams.

Note: The Factory Service Manual is invaluable however, it is not for the newbie mechanic as it assumes a certain level of automotive expertise. It is not a step-by-step guide like Haynes or The Enthusiast's Shop Manual. It is more in-depth though, compared to these books.

What part of the car was damaged after the 'small accident'? I'd start troubleshooting there.
