If you dont already have one in your possession, get one and keep it in a safe place.. Your birth certificate that is. After my wreck I started looking for a new car. Got my financing arranged, and was ready to start getting serious. Found a vehicle I liked. One problem. I had recently lost my driver's license. I know two places where I had to show it when using a credit card as proof of identity. Went to both places and they didnt have it. The issue is, in order to finance a car, you apparently have to have a driver's license. Before you say, "just go to the local DMV and get one." you have to have proof of ID which is, a DL which i do not have because I lost mine, passport or government photo ID, state photo ID, or birth certificate. With the birth certificate and supporting documents like social security card that is apparently good enuf. You cant just go to the county courthouse either because you have to show photo proof of who you are. The only way to do it without that is apparently to send copy of SS to Austin. They can expedite it for a fee but it still takes 10-15 business days. So, I'm planning on going to the local DMV and begging for mercy to see if they will let me use other documentation to show who I am,

Bummer... If you submit a change of address online, they will send you a new drivers license. Only problem is, you need all of the different numbers on the card to fill out the form. You could pull it off if you had a photocopy of your ID. Your Dr office might have one on file.

The easiest way to get a birth certificate without ID is to have an immediate family member who does have ID go down to the county clerk's office and get it for you. Mother, Father, Brother, Sister, or Grandparent. If you're married, your wife might be able to get it as well, but I can't recall.

In some courts (like county JP courts), if you pleaded no contest or guilty on a traffic ticket, they'll have a photocopy of your DL in the case file.

I had to renew in person at the DMV last time and hey confiscated my old license. I think that audit number changes everytime you renew anyway.

I have been driving (and renewing my license) for 47 years. I have never had my old license confiscated.

When I did my DL renewal, the woman cut the top off and gave it back to me. Said I could use it to get a new license for up to a year if I lost me renewal.

Another reason to get a CHL If you have to use it as ID nobody knows what it is and they get a wierd look when they finally realize what it is, but it is a govt issued ID. Course lose your wallet and that one's much more hassle to get replaced than a DL.

I've been in this situation before as well, and yea it sucks. I now have the necessary docs at home and locked up.
