Thread: Is it SAFE to drive home?

Default Is it SAFE to drive home?

The car was runing fine yesterday when I parked it. This morning it acts like it is 'missing' and lugging at low speed on 2nd. By the time I got to work, the CEL flashed 3 to 4 times and than stayed on. I know it is absolutley NOT OK to drive any more when there is a flashing CEL. However, I have a 'flashed' and solid CEL. I am 23 miles from home. You think I can drive it home w/o making more damage(s) The closest Autozone and ORiley is miles away or way out of my way going home.

    I see three possibilities:

    1. If it makes it home then yes it was safe to drive home.
    2. If it leaves you stranded 1/2 way home then maybe no it was not safe to drive home.
    3. If it burst into flames and burns to the ground then defiantly no it was not safe to drive home.

POS, you left me speechless! Serious, if you were me, will you risk it to drive it home as is?

You gave us basically no information but want us to guess if it would be OK to drive 23 miles.

How in the hell would anyone know if it would be OK??

BTW. I'd go get the codes read before I attempted the 23 mile run home but that is just me.

Where are you? It is possible that you may be near someone with a scanner.

At low rpm and low TPS you aren't going to make enough cylinder pressure to do any real damage.

I am on Harry Hines next door to Parkland Hospital. I guess I'll take my chance and drive it 'gingerly' home. At worse I will get an engine rebuild. It has 160K on the clock already.

I think there is an O'Reillys and an Autozone north of you on H.H. If it was me, I would chance a couple miles of surface street driving to get the codes read before I would chance the 22 mile freeway drive.

Titus, you're right! I find the AZ on Inwood about a couple miles from me. I'll go over there first! Thanks!

Try a new set of plug wires.

So what's the verdict? Did you get the car home and figure out the problem?

It was a loose spark plug on the #3 cyclinder. All is well!
