Sooooo glad I am no longer in IT. Sure the money isn't as good but I do have some job security and I never really loved computers, I loved the money I was making in the late 90s. After my last lay-off I decided I didn't want to be 50 years old and looking for yet another job. I'm now doing something I enjoy, well half of it anyways. The FedEx gig is purely for the benefits. As for degrees and such, it seems to be generally speaking of course, "It's not what you know, it's who you know." There are exceptions as mentioned above but in this day and age you really need to people network.

I do the interviewing for our positions. I do not care about certifications and diplomas as much as what you know. In fact resumes full of certifications rarely get a phone screen out of us.
