OK... this is a weird one for me... never heard of a trailer inspection and I have a large horse trailer. Trailer weighs empty around 3800 pounds and based on weight of horses, tack, and what not, I've pulled it weighing around 8500 pounds or so... and my trailer is pretty light compared to some of the mobile palaces my friends have ( easy 12k pounds ).

Anyone have a good place to investigate this further?

Thanks... I CAN read... that just points to the statute... I was hoping for some information on who to call locally to see about it... who does the inspections for example... I doubt my local oil change place would touch it...

Since you may be the only Horse Trailer owner on this particular forum maybe you might want to ask your horse buddies. I'm thinking they may have more experience with this issue.

My brother and all of his friends work horses and have horse trailers never seen an inspection sticker on one.

Inspections for trailers is somewhat recent. And, I believe it's only over a certain GVW.

Our hard luck story:
Going to Nevada last year we passed through New Mexico. We got stopped about ten miles past the weigh station and had to go several miles to the next exit to loop back to the weigh station. Since we were a private vehicle we shouldn't have had to stop. Anyway, turns out we were over the GVW limit for our licenses. Trailer rated at 15,000 and the truck was rated at 12,000 or so. The limit for a normal license is 26,000. The trailer only had one Jeep in it and was way under its GVW. I can't remember what the whole rig weighed but it was under 20,000. We had to wait in Tucumcari overnight while some friends brought their 3/4 ton pickups for us to borrow. While the trucks were much less capable of hauling the load, we were allowed to leave impound with the trailers since the combined GVW for truck/trailer was now below 26,000. We were definitely safer in the one ton trucks, but this guy was a super stickler and he was right according to the law. We still thought it was stupid. Just think of the size of the trailer we'd be allowed to pull with a Miata! We went around New Mexico on the way back, even though we were under weight.
