Thread: A/C stopped working!

    Default A/C stopped working!

He guys, I hope someone here can help me with my a/c here. Ok, so yesterday I was trying to figure out why my cooling fan doesn't come on. I have a hanes shop manual and saw that the fuse box under the hood called for a 20a fuse and I had a 10a fuse in it. I think it's for the "ad fan". Which I didn't know yesterday because the pictures in the manual suck! Any who I decided to take my 20a fuse from my wipers and put it in the slot and drove the car with the a/c off to try and heat up the car to get the cooling fan to come on(at the time I wasn't sure what that fuse slot was for). I started to smell melted plastic so I pull over and removed the fuse and put the 10a back in and parked the car for the night. When I got in this morning to go to work the a/c sounds like it's kicking on but no cold air. I will check to see if the compressor is actually kicking on during my lunch break.

    Thanks

No freon? (if the compressor is kicking-on) Are both fans running when the AC is on?

they weren't before this happened. Only the a/c fan was coming on before. I just checked and when I turn on the a/c the fan kicks on but the compressor doesn't. It was working fine yesterday. I sure hope it didn't all leak out. LoL anyone know what the 'ad fan' is for?

well, with it knocking you need a new compressor and a new accumulator for sure. with it knocking there is prob a lot of metal flakes circulating in your ac system so you will need to flush it all out.... not a cheap fix i will tell you that

Yeah. If it is that, the process is a PITA and time consuming. I did it to my car and wouldn't look forward to doing it again.

    Who said it was knocking?

I'd bet the fan is dead pretty common on our vintage Miatas. Check to see if you are getting 12V to the fan if you are the fan has died.

The pressure switch will not allow the compressor to kick on if the systems pressure is below a set level.

If the compressor isn't actually turning on, you either have no freon or the compressor clutch is bad. Or the whole compressor is shot. Good luck.

And if you buy a replacement fan motor from Oreilly, be sure to check the polarity of the wiring. The one I bought had the same color wires as the stock unit but they were actually wired in reverse. Doesn't work good that way.

Thanks guys. I am taking it to my a/c guy to look at it. Does anyone know what the ad fan is though?

My guess is the previous owner filled it w/freon, sold it to you before it all leaked out and you need to find the leak, fix it, and it'll work again. I've been wrong before though.

ok, a little bit of background info. It did have a leak from one of the lines coming out of the compressor like a month or two ago. So I replaced both lines myself and took it to a shop to have it vacuumed and refilled. It's been working fine since so I believe it has to do with me putting a 20a fuse in the ad fan (or if it was printed wrong from the manufacture the fuse for the ac fan which makes more since) instead of the 10a fuse which was in to begin with cause me to blow something because like I said in the first post I smelt some melted plastic like I burned up something. I just need to find out what. LoL

What side is the a/c fan anywasy? I was reading and think I might have been wrong all along. I thought the a/c fan was the one on the drivers side and the cooling fan to be the one on the passenger side. Right? Reason for thinking this is because the drivers side only comes on when I turn on the a/c to the car. The fan on the passengers side hasn't been working and that is what started all of this. Me hoping to get it to work.

Not sure I see my '94 has the same fuse but since my A/C is currently working I'm going to listen to my grandfathers advice. "If it works don't fvck with it".

Some good stuff here but no mention of the fuse - http://www.miata.net/garage/CoolingSystemProblems.html

FIXED!!!! LoL. I feel so stupid. Ok so I don't think I told y'all this but when I saw that the ad fuse needed to be 20a and mine was 10a I decided since I didn't have an fuses laying around I would take the 20a fuse from the wipers. Well shock as it is the wipers has to have a fuse in it for the a/c clutch to kick in. Not sure why. Here is where I found it

    http://books.google.com/books?id=8eN...page&q&f=false

Anyways I never thought about putting the 20a fuse back from where I pulled it but I did and now my a/c is working just fine! Phew....Now I did check and it's my a/c fan that is out. I check and the fan is getting power so I just need to find a used a/c fan out there some where cuz the parts place wanted over $100 for it! Jeez! Oh well....I'm on the highway 90% of the time.
