Thread: Car Classification

  1. #1

    Default Car Classification

Wanting to get a Mazdaspeed Motorsports membership so I'm thinking of doing a couple of AutoX events. I noticed two ER events coming up Nov 5th and 6th.

Couple of questions from you seasoned cone-dodgers.

What time will I need to be there? It looks like 8am - ??? It's a two hour drive from Murphy to Miserable Wells, Ugh! (That's a major reason why I don't AutoX.)

Wondering what class I would be in. I did look at the SCCA rulebook but after 10 minutes of reading rule after rule I figure I'd just ask.

    1996 Miata R-Package

    Mods:

    Hard Dog Rollbar
    Aftermarket Flush Headlights (Euro-crappies)
    Turn Signal Intakes
Racing Beat Sway Bars and Sway Bar Brace
    Tein Flex Coil-overs
    Shock Tower Brace
    SS Brake and Clutch lines
    Alluminum FM Flywheel
    Short Shifter
    Racing Beat Intake
    Aftermarket Header
Borla Dual Exhaust (bumper cut for extra tip)
    European Rear Finish Panel
    OEM Power Steering Added

    I may run 225/45/15 Toyo RA-1 on 15x8 6ULs (It's either that or 205/50/15 Falken Ziex ZE-912 on 15x7 C1M wheels)
Also would like to run my Ultra Shield race seat with 5-point harness

I know on the local level, classification isn't a HUGE deal but I also didn't want to ruffle any feathers. I'm more interested in getting results than what those results are. (My excuse for why I'll be so slow)
    ...and across the line.

I would suggest CSP. I think the headlights are illegal, but no one will complain unless you win... and there is someone else is in your class to complain.

I would arrive no later than 8 AM.

Note that NTAXS, PCA, or BMWCCA results are also fine if to don't want to mess with SCCA style classification. it dies not have to he two results from the same club.

If you do decide to go to ER, I'd just bring the RA1s and run in SSM (Super Street Modified). Your car would be legal there.

+1 on CSP. But, I think you would also be OK with Super Street Mod., SSM, or D Prepared, DP.
On the track, I am fearless.
If you were as slow as me, you wouldn't be afraid either.

All good advice. Do the headlights retract? If they do, then no worries in CSP.

Since you'll be on street tires, run in the Tire-pax group (TCSP or TSSM) and you'll have someone to run against.

Iain's point about the easy-classing clubs (NTAXS and BMW) is really the best idea - more runs, less driving and you simply class your car by displacement, so you'll be more evenly matched. You are in the lowest displacement class in either club (1 for NTAXS, X for BMW.) They do not change your class for any of your mods, only for FI and R-comps.

Or be a man and run TT for your mazdaspeed requirements.

Yes. Spend hundreds on TT's to save tens on parts. Track junkie logic FTW.

    .

+1.This FTW. NATX and BMW ax = casual, no worries, more runs, no membership required, laid back fun.

+1 (but should read thousands and FTL). Real track junkies ain't skeerd of little orange cones or being beat by cars with 1/2 the hp/tq. Ax seat time is bang for the buck bargans with the 2 clubs above.

You mean after working for Track Dog all this time you still don't get an employee discount on parts??

track day $100-200 and 1hour to 1.5 track time.
    Auto x $35 -60 and 4 to 10 minutes of track time.

track day at the low end $1.66 a minute.
auto x at the low end $8.74 a minute.

And before you try to say you use less gas and track is farther away. Can get to msr and back on the same gas as most autox and spend ~$40 more on gas. still only $2.33 a minute of track time.

While we are arguing about which is better (autocross or track), let's also argue theist versus athiest, because I am pretty sure that one side will sway the other after a few posts.

For sure. We can also argue the real vs fake boobs, Chrome vs. Firefox, Kellers vs. Hooters, Romney vs Perry and tastes great vs. less filling and convince each other how retarded thee other side is.

Btw, the correct answers are: Fake, Chrome, Kellers, all politicians are the same, and tastes great.

Then we drag out the minute vs dollar cost of ax vs tt and adjust to suit our needs. LOL. $100 TT? MSR-C holds one NASA TT per year? We should compare costs of running an entire season of NASA TT vs a season of ax with BMW.

Bottom line is if you just want to get a MS account, do AX. What do you need? 2 events. Done in one weekend for a c-note.

Yes I get a discount on parts but even Town North's cost+ pricing is higher than Mazdaspeed's rock bottom prices.

Thank you. I thought that was what I was stating. Never meant for this to get into a Track vs. AutoX debate. If I wanted to do TT I would have posted this question in the Track section.

A few years ago I saw a poll about this question. "Do you prefer small natural breast or large artificial breast?" 93% of the respondents say YES!

Meh.. all the REALLY good drivers do both, right KenO??

I guess we'll just ignore the cost of tires, roll bars, brakes, clutches, race seats, harnesses, nomex clothes...

I do find it interesting that its the "track junkies" who get so worked up about autox, and no autox'ers seem to feel the need to bash the track crowd. Just saying.

I guess you could come out and show us your superior driving skills. I'm sure we don't stand a chance...

Don't drop the soap around the remaining 7%, especially if sporting a moustache.
