Thread: Tell me if this idea is stupid

Default Tell me if this idea is stupid

I was thinking of how I hate spending time up on a rack in the car when I am getting an allignment holding the wheel to keep it straight.
When I dont do it, the steering wheel always comes up off center.

I know you autocross and track guys do this to counter your weight in the car, but for me its more about just keeping my steering wheel straight, especially on my current car where it is extremely senitive to driver input.

So I was thinking about taking two eyelets on lag bolts and installing on drivers side and passenger side in the floor but out of the way.
Then taking a couple small ratcheting tie downs and attaching to either side of the steering wheel to keep the wheel straight without being in the car while the work is being done.

I think it would hold it straight, what do you guys think?

You must REALLY hate sitting in the car on the rack.

Anyway, how will the caster get set if you have the steering wheel tied down?

Definitely stupid. If your shop can't align the car without you in it, you need a better shop.
Maybe 4 wheels aren't so bad after all... wickett.org

They don't have that wheel holder bracket at your shop?
    M3 is always the answer.

The car was really never right after the incident.......

Why are you having to get it aligned frequently enough for this to be a concern?

We sit in the car for weight, not to hold the wheel. In fact, my alignment shop doesn't want me to put any pressure on the wheel.

Ed Chine, on Wheeler Dealer, had a device to keep the steering wheel straight during alignment. I can't remember the episode, but I'm thinking it was the TVR.

    Thanks Eric : )

Well I have tried several places and every damn time my wheel is turned to one side or the other.
Not a whole lot but enough to make me crazy.

These were good shops too, not NTB or someplace like that.

And at this point I am thinking of returning the car to a little less agressive #'s anyhow.
For my taste its actually a "little" too darty

I drive aggressively on the street but never have time to make an autocross anymore.
so I still want performance but not quite as much dart at high speeds, this car is set up perfect for autocross though at its current state.
