For the first time in my long life, I actually STOOD IN LINE for technology--at Stonebriar for a Microsoft "Surface" Tablet. First day it came out-2.5 hour wait. I have played with it this week and can say that Windows 8 is nothing but Windows 7 with a turbo. Different experience (touch screen), but same desktop, Hotmail, EBay...
My preference would be to wait on Microsoft upgrades until mid-November when they roll out the "full " version, the "Pro". If you are close to Stonebriar, go up to the Microsoft "store" (kiosk where Starbucks used to be in the middle of the mall) and play with the sample devices. Definitely a different experience.
As far as my Surface Tablet goes, the price is right for a tablet with a strong smartphone microprocessor running Micorsoft Office 2013. That's all I need.
By the way: You cannot install your own programs on the Surface (Dragon Viavoice, Adobe Pro, OBD II ecu tuning software, etc. NONE!) What you see is all you will be able to use.
Regards,
Paul

I wonder I can switch back to Windows7 if I am not happy with the 8 w/o much difficult!

Historically it hasn't been real easy to "downgrade" back to an older version of Windows...

I get Win8 for free (student) and agree with everything here. I played with it for a week or so on a virtual machine, and I'm not impressed. I get it for free and haven't updated my primary PC to it, so that should tell you if I think it's worth paying for
Windows 7 works great. Windows 8 felt like they tried to make it 'pretty' by globbing a bunch of makeup on it. Turns out that technique doesn't work for operating systems either.
