Thread: Salvage Title Question

    Default Salvage Title Question

I have a few questions about salvage title that needed help with. The story is that one of my 99 was hit from the back and the insurance totaled the car. The damage is not that bad at all and is very fixable. I settled with a reduced $$ and keeping the car. Now I have a car with salvage title.

    1. What I have to do to get the salvage title and register again? Do I need to have it inspected before I can register again? Where do I take it to be inspected?

    2. As for insurance, can I buy my insurance like I always do from the same place? I only have liability and I know I will not able to get comprehensive again for the salvage title car.

    3. If this car get hit again, will the insurance of the guy that hit me pay for the damage? Or they will pay very little $ since the salvage title car value is greatly disminised?

I have never done this, any help/info is greatly appreciated!

I think you will be able to order a new title online, or drop by your county tax office. I Have no idea if you will have to get it inspected ton register it again, but I doubt it.

I think the only way you can argue with another insurance co if you get hit is to carefully document all the repair work with photos and receipts to demonstrate that the car was properly repaired. I still expect some reduced value, but not on repair costs, since they are the same on any car for a given repair.

I don't remember where I saw the requirements to rebuild a title from salvaged, but it's out there somewhere.

My NB was salvaged, but it has a rebuilt title now and the dmv/insurance treat it as a regular car. I was able to get comprehensive insurance on it with no problems.

You will need to get the VTR-441 form from the Texas web site, fill it out and go to your local tax office with your title which you will surrender along with $10 or so, the state will mail you back your shiny new salvage title.

    2. As for insurance, can I buy my insurance like I always do from the same place? I only have liability and I know I will not able to get comprehensive again for the salvage title car.
You can buy insurance any where just like normal......full coverage is possible, the insurer may want to inspect the car before offering comp and collision coverage to ensure it has been repaired from the first incident.

Most insurance companies deduct around 30% from the ACV if your car were involved in an incident that resulted in it being totalled again. If you are hit by someone who is at fault and they have insurance you will be paid just like normal.......

    1. I never had to do this for my cars. If he buys the car back immediately, since the title never changes hands, must he do this? Does this apply to cars with "TMU" on the title for mileage?

^ You can keep your blue title and even sell the car to somebody but whenever someone goes to the title office to register the car in their name they are going to be informed the title has to be surrendered and a salvage title will come back. A lot of scum bag people sell the car with a good "blue" title and don't tell the buyer about the salvage history........
The fact the title never changes hands if you owner retain is moot if the insurance company follows through and notifies the state that VIN is now salvage.
TMU (true mileage unknown) would be put on a salvage title a lot of times as the actual mileage might not be known at the time of the accident due to a digital odometer not reading....however TMU does not necessarily mean a salvage title.

Why did you let them total it? You get them to right a check for $100 less than the total amount.

^ that is really not an option if the adjuster is doing his job properly..........many times I have agreed not to total someones car and it has bit me in the ass......... If it's a total it's a total.
