If I bought it, I would then want a touch screen. I don't feel like getting caught up in the upgrade dominoes, so i am passing for now.
So who has played with windows 8 is it worth upgrading?
Microsoft has a $39.99 upgrade deal going for a limited time and the Barrage of commercials by Microsoft is making me want to buy!

Still on XP at the office and the house. I fear change.

I love it when I get an upgrade at Dominos!

Give it a few years to shake the bugs out.
It looks like a tablet OS with lots of pretty shiny things that make it easy for teenage girls to play Angry Birds. I'm guessing it's 100% garbage.

$38.88 @ microcenter (retail packaging, Pro 64bit upgrade).
I'm not sold on it yet. The thought of a convertible like the Surface Pro or the Asus Book make them think about one to replace DW's m11x, but I'm worried that it will be another Zune player/Vista... considering that the UI is awful Zuney.
Loaded it on a test machine and it aggravated the crap out of me. Smashed the PC into bits.
Seriously, it is too much like a tablet interface. Looking forward to testing the Surface we are getting.
M3 is always the answer.
Do you like resting your arms on the desk while you use your PC or do you want to lift and swing them around like a monkey while using your new touch screen monitor? It sure looked neat in Minority Report, but I'll choose the prior for real life (unless it's a tablet). I will stay with 7 for now.
You guys all realize you a) don't have to have a touchscreen and b) don't have to use the Metro UI... you can do the desktop like with Win7 and just get the tiles when you click the "start" menu.
Ok, so it works like Win7. Why upgrade?
M3 is always the answer.
I get a $15 upgrade thingy for months old laptop. I wonder I should even take the bait? I hate to be the guinea pig, epically with MS!

That I cannot answer... but there's enough people clinging to a 10 year old XP (and IE6!) that I don't anticipate many people upgrading.
Personally I think MSFT has a very tough row to hoe in the future... Too much competition, and even if they did everything "right" they've got such a negative reputation at this point that... well... it's gonna be tough.
Go try it at CompUSA or Best Buy and play with it for a while, then think how you will teach your dad to use it!
Here's my 2 cents
I get where MS is going with the whole unified interface between the different devices (tablet/phone/pc). That being said, I don't want a phone OS on my PC. I've played around with the betas and RC's and have really liked every MS OS since 3.1 with the exception being ME.
As for using 8 on a normal desktop PC with no touch interface and typical KB/M input devices, it's kinda akward and counter intuitive. Charms, semi-central options for whatever you hope to get to configure, tile start screen vs actual menu, or being relegated to constantly searching for the app you want...... meh and barf.
My solution: an optional live-tiled background with a normal, traditonal, desktop interface, even if it is just an option for a default interface.
The desktop shoud not be an app with a dumbed down task bar where someone has to constantly jump back out to the tile screen to call up another app. Also I should not have to go to task manager to find out what apps are still running in the background. At least OSx has the little light under the icons to let you know the app is still running. (For those of you that have thought I hate Macs, I don't, I think OSx a great Unix GUI)
I for one will not be getting 8 and am perfectly happy with 7 on all my devices. Why would I wnat to spend any money or time to get less of a usable PC.

I'm a bitter clinger. I like Win7, but if I hadn't gotten a new laptop or my company upgrading, I'd still be on winXP. It works. I have android for my tablet I use for school, but the touchscreen interface sucks for anything beyond.
Granted I may not be the target demographic, but I fear Microsoft may have...

The commercials are catchy.....
My 10 year old laptop running XP is getting long in the tooth, but I hesitate to get a new OS from Microsoft. I've already had to root around for the fuse controlling the "Sync powered by Microsoft" twice in my new car because its locked up and bugged out......

Didn't Windoze used to offer a "Classic View" option for those of us that are too old to play with kiddie toys? I take it this isn't the case with Win8?
I actually like Win7 quite a bit - it's certainly tons better than the shit heap called Vista. My home machine has held up perfectly, even under the porn gauntlet it faces on a weekly basis...
My work laptop still had XP until they upgraded me to a new Win7 machine last week. One odd thing I've noticed is that Win7 makes it a little harder to use hot keys and right-click/hot key combos (I use them a lot more when I'm jumping back and forth between browsers, etc). Disappointing, but I can work around it...
Take it back and ask them to put knobs and sliders back in...![]()
