according to the "over the phone" diagnosis, and my inspection(by pulling and turning the driveshaft) the pinion gear is moving far to much... some say bearings, some say "crush washers" or spacers are bad... I've ordered all the wear parts from Mazda, new bearings, spacers, etc...

I plan on cannibalizing the 4:30 ring and pinion onto the Torsen, losing the 4:10 gears... which pinion carrier(the big lump of cast iron that holds all this stuff) is better? the newer one from my '01 open diff, or the older('94-97?) version?

The carrier is the same for both. Use which ever one looks nicer. You're going to clean it up and put some paint on it while you have everything apart, right? It's iron so it needs some love in the preservation department.
