    Default Computer help?

I have an old HP computer with XP Pro. If I turn my monitor on, with it not connected to the computer, it comes on and shows a screen that says it’s OK, but check the input cable. When I plug the cable into the computer, the monitor screen goes black and the green light in the front starts blinking.

Does this sound like a video card problem? Would installing a video card fix the problem?

    Thanks in advance.

Is the video built-in to the mother board? There should be a way to disable it (with pin jumpers) and try an external video card.

That is normally the sign of a dead on-board Video card.

We use HP's here at the World Headquarters and we have seen a couple go to the great beyond the same way over the years..... None of them were ever worth fixing so never tried the video card route. Just pulled them out of service.

    What model HP??

I can get a video card from Tiger Direct for about $20. I think it's worth a try. And, this computer has the magic parallel port for the dongle.

Tricky bit can be disabling the old on-board Video it is on now and in command even thought it is broken.

I'd see what it took to do that before I bought it anything.

Do you have another computer to connect that monitor to - just to verify it's working?

^I might have an old PCIe video card at home for testing. You can keep it if it works out for you.

I'm considering it...let me make sure I have one first.

EDIT - You do need PCIe, correct?

    According to http://bizsupport1.austin.hp.com/bc/.../c00765868.pdf

It has a PCIe x16 slot. I would try installing a card there. Usually if the board finds a video card there, it uses that instead of the on-board. It's also sometimes possible to disable the on-board video through the BIOS, but you have to get there first. If installing a video card in the PCIe x16 slot works, I wouldn't bother trying to disable the on-board graphics.

Got a video card. I'll try it tomorrow and let everyone know how it works.

Learning is good. The computer had a PCIe card installed when I got it. I had never seen one like it before. I learned that it is a DVI card. I have never had anything that was DVI before. My son's advice was to remove that card and see what happens. The monitor and computer are working together now. The DVI card in the slot was taking priority over the Video card in the mother board. All I need to do was remove that card.

Someone once said that learning is good. I wish I could remember who.

    Thanks to all that helped.
