    Question Wireless router

I'm dumping ATT DSL today and having Charter internet installed. I'll need a wireless router and plan to pick-up the Netgear N150.

Anyone know if that's a decent router or have a better suggestion?

Anything you replace the AT&T wireless with will not have the range of the AT&T router.

I've been fighting that issue at home think I'm on my 3rd router but thankfully Amazon takes stuff back no questions asked!

I would buy either a media-designed router that supports hd bandwidth and/or multiple routers to get good coverage all over the house.

^Bummer, good to know. The ATT wireless reaches across the whole house, and even to the detached garage!

They all suck. Some suck less, but buy somewhere with a good return policy. If you can snag a used Apple Airport Extreme, they're really stable and reliable, BUT they do lack a few features that you may or may not care about, and are a bit pricey new. I got a couple used ones for $40 each, though, and am muy happy.

Definitely buy locally at stores with good return policy. I found routers that have external antennas seem to have better range.

Get one that you can flash with a custom firmware. Like tomato or DD-WRT. I know our house isnt as big as yours, but I get signal to the street. Also buy your own modem and save $10 a month with charter. I have that one and it has been great for 3+ years.

There are several 4th and 5th gen Airport Extremes on CL for under $100.

+1 on the custom firmware. Night and day difference on my TWC cable modem.

Does it download your "special movies" faster?

What's the benefit of being able to flash the firmware? (Besides loading pr0n faster)

    PS
What about this one? Has good reviews, external antennae and can be flashed.

It only has "G"! "N" is what all the cool kids have for their modern wireless stuff!

^Since my cable connection will be rated at 30mbps, I don't think that router will be a bottleneck!

If you are in a dense suburban area and any of your devices have N, you want a SIMULTANEOUS dual-band N router. You'll need the 2.4 Ghz band for range and penetrating multiple walls, but the 5 GHz band will work much better when you're in range, simply because there are fewer of your neighbors using it.

Rogue may have other interference issues... Or with some luck just a dead/dying router.

Is ATT going to take back their router? I have two old Verizon routers sitting here.
Just plug the ethernet (RJ45) into the router and continue to use the wireless router portion, just not the cable converter.

The WRT54GL is what I have, it has been going strong for at least 6 years.

I think I have one of those in a drawer here at the world headquarters that we used until we changed providers.

After a bunch of reading and research, here's the one I'm getting. Found a new 'refurb' on Fleabay.
