Thread: MoTeC ???

    Default MoTeC ???

OK... This is probably a question for land, but I thought I would try here first. I was talking to a close friend of mine about how I was thinking of saving up for a full ECU, and he says
"I had bought a MoTeC to install in my Acura 2 years ago, but sold the car before putting it in. I think it is still in my attic.. Want me to dig around and see if I can find it for you?"

I am not one to look the ultimate TCB $3000 gift horse in the mouth, but would I just end up getting myself in trouble with this? Searches on the point board point to the MoTeC being the best ECU out there but too expensive for most people to seriously consider. I haven't seen much in my searches about how difficult it is to install and tune. Does anyone have any experience with this at all?

It's not going to be any more difficult to install and tune than any other standalone. It's [one of] the best systems out there for the money (better systems are much more, hello EFI systems) and it's really quite user friendly compared to the lower end stuff. If you actually end up paying for it, then Autronic has what I would consider Motec level quality and features with a few less bells and whistles for just more than half the money.

Cool.... Have you actually worked with tuning a Motec? How about in a Miata?

First question that comes to mind is, does it plug into your current harness? If not is there substantial documentation on how to tie your car into the computer?

BTW, I've only had experiance with the Link.

No (neither do any of the other high end stand-alones). There is plenty of documentation. A partial new harness will likely have to be made. This is common fare for the people who install these systems professionally. If you're not really good with this stuff I would suggest having someone good do it.

I've not tuned on the Motec, but I've watched it being tuned and used it's data aqusition software. I also took a Motec sponsored seminar on Data Aquisition about a year ago. I've done some tuning with the Autronic and watched a lot of tuning on the Autronic. They're very similar (one is an offshoot company of the other).

I've not done any ecu tuning on miatas but there's not reason why they would be difficult/different.

I was thinking it might be a good idea to start with this from FM:

In addition, there seem to be a few guys on the pointy board that have them. I would hope that they would be interested in sharing any knowledge. If it looks like this is going to be the way to go, I will start PMing everyone who has ever posted on the Motec subject. :)

Cool... If I end up getting this, I see a shopping trip for a case of your favorite beer in my future!

If you need help with soldering... I have a nice Pace MBT-250 soldering station here... with most of the surface mount tips. (great for taking roms out of ECUs!)
