Thread: help,

    Well,

    IIRC, the NA's used an 80 and the NB's use a 100amp...

    At least my 90 & my 92s have used the 80 and my 03 has a 100amp fuse in there.

    If the only thing that seems to work is the headlights then you probably have blown that 80amp fuse.

    If the starter won't turn over then check that 80 amp fuse and check the ST SIGN FUSE - a 10 amp fuse in the fuse block under the hood. It's what protects the wiring in case of a short in the starter motor's relay circuit.

    But... I would start out checking it in this order:

    Main Fuse, ST SIGN fuse, all the fuses , ignition switch, ground wires under the hood, battery connections, starter.... and from there it depends...

    That's as good as I can get it for you based on your posts (which like the others said are hard to follow)...

    If you can get the starter to turn over then you can look in the oil filler hole and check to see if the CAMs are turning. If they aren't then you broke your timing belt.

    If you didn't overheat the car and if you didn't lose oil pressure & lock the motor then my money is on an electrical problem. Since you weren't there when the car failed it is really hard to tell how long she drove it under those conditions...

    Hell, you could've overheated the car and not known it if you lost your coolant. I'm not 100% sure how the temp would register on the Miata if you lost coolant. On an old Cherokee I had I lost the coolant and it registered cold since there wasn't any coolant around the sensor anymore! Luckily I saw the big cloud of steam behind me. I'm not sure if the Miata would register that way or not... I'm sure the others here will chime in on that point.

    1. last week, cel and overheat, driven approximately 1 mile, when i got down to the car it was not steaming, and about 30 minutes after cel the car was cool enough to put coolant in it, the car ran fine the next day
    2. oil change on sunday at pepboys
    3. last night.car was driven 2 miles and then cel light, total loss of rpm's and oil pressure. and car would not crank
    4. this morning car will try to crank and go nowhere, radiator is full.
    ```````````````````````````````````````````````
    5.completely lost, grandfather says to remove the spark plugs, screw compression valve into spark plug hole, crank car a few times and compare all of the ratios
    6. i will also check the fuses when i get home
    oh yeah what is IIRC?
    So if you try and start the car it will turn over? Yes or No
    Quick check of the timing belt - remove the oil filler cap and look in there while someone is cranking the engine. If you see no cam movement it's likely the belt.
    IIRC - If I Recall Correctly
    IIRC stands for If I Recall/Remember Correctly.
    Stupid question - have you checked to see if there is oil on the dipstick? Perhaps Pep Boys didn't screw the drain plug or the filter back on tightly enough, and you've lost all the oil. Is the underside of the car oily?
    2nd stupid question - have you checked to see what code the car threw? If it's a '96+ (OBDII) car, you'll need a code reader form somewhere like AutoZone. If it's earlier than a '96, then here are instructions on how to read the code. If we know what the code is, that will probably help determine what happened and where to go from here.
    Lastly, when you say "the car won't crank", do you mean:
    A) I turn the key and the starter turns the engine over, but the engine doesn't fire.
    or
    B) I turn the key and I can hear the starter whirring, but the engine is not turning over at all.
    or
    c) I turn the key and nothing happens at all.
    I think he means option B (I turn the key and I hear the starter whirring but the engine doesn't turn over). If that's the case, I'm guessing the timing belt went.
    Well shoot... I live just blocks away from you but I really don't think I would be of much help in this situation.
    Titus you could help him check the few things people have mentioned. Better than me driving down from Denton, which is hard for me to pull off these days.
    I spoke on the phone with him earlier today, and from what he mentioned to me, its just a whirring sound when trying to crank it, which generally means NO compression, I would surmise the belt did indeed go by-by...Hopefully, if that is the case there is no damage to the head, etc...
    miata(technologies?) the one in dallas said
    $500 for water pump timing belt and lots of seals and gaskets
    tried calling the other miata mechanic (the preferred one by TMS) but his phone is disconnected
    I suspect Town North will quote you around $500. Much safer bet than Miata Technologies. Or, if you're not in a hurry, you could buy the parts and do it yourself with plenty of help... We love to play with our cars...
