    Default Urgent NA Inspection Help!!!!

So i just got my 1990 NA and the previous owner took out seat belts and put in harnesses, put an aftermarket steering wheel in so no airbag, and the car has no horn. So the question is even though the car is a "Classic" in texas what will cause me to fail inspection? Tires have lots of tread, brakes are good, lights work as do signals, and i believe I'm emissions exempt because its a "classic". Any help is appreciated!

Big vehicles don't see Miata's...get a horn, a loud one.

I thought classic just meant you only do safety inspection no emissions. Safety will require a horn and 3 point I think.

Seat belts are going to depend on the inspector. I got away with the 5 point on my Jeep, but I know others that were rejected.

    Inspection/Rejection Criteria

20.23 Seat Belts. Front seat belts are required on every motor vehicle in which front seat belt anchorages were a part of the manufacturer’s original equipment on the vehicle.
Anchorages defined: A seat belt anchorage consists of a threaded hole in suitable structure to receive the seat belt attachment fittings or a circular pluck which is welded to the vehicle chassis. Self-treading bolts are inserted into the pluck to form the complete seat belt anchorage assembly.
    1. Inspection Procedure. Inspect front lap seat belts for frayed, split, or torn webbing; malfunctioning buckles; and loose or damaged anchorages or floor pan. Vehicles originally equipped with automatic seat belts (shoulder belts) without front lap seat belts will have the automatic belts inspected.

Front lap belts only will be inspected in all other vehicles. The ignition seat belt interlock system is not an item of inspection.
    2. Inspect for and reject if:

    a. Front lap seat belts are required and not present.
    b. Seat belt webbing is frayed, split, or torn.

    c. Belt anchorages or attachment fittings are loose, badly corroded, missing, or not fastened to belt.
    d. Belt buckles loose or inoperative.
    e. All seat belt anchor bolts are not securely fastened to floor or are missing.
    f. Pelvic restraint is not present.
    g. Seat belt will not adjust to allow proper fit.

If you register it as an antique there is no inspection of any kind.

Don't forget about the limited usage that goes along with the Antique Plates.

FWIW - I got stopped by Ft. Worth last time I had mine out so I guess they do check or maybe he was just a classic Lac fan. He also was deeply concerned that I had insurance on it (which I did.)

Yeah, but you left out the part about you can only legally drive to/from shows, etc. and mileage is limited.

    ^Yep!

The fine print on the classic plates deal below:
STATEMENT - State law makes falsifying information on this application a third-degree felony

My signature indicates that I am the owner of the above described vehicle. The frame, body and motor are at least 25 years old, and the vehicle is a collector’s item that will be used solely for exhibition, club activities, parades, and other functions of public interest (replicas do not qualify for Antique plates). The vehicle will not be used for regular transportation except when routine maintenance is needed. The vehicle will not carry advertising.
Pay special attention to the following grouping of words -> State law makes falsifying information on this application a third-degree felony. (Oh my! )

    club activities
just pointing out a true fact. I don't drive mine for transportation on any kind of regular basis, and track/autox events are club activities. Actually only made it to one autox so far, almost every other trip out of the garage has been to Kellers, another club activity.

If they fail you on the harness versus seat belt ,you can always call a Highway patrol inspector and ask them to re evaluate the failure
Every station as a HP that comes by once a month or about and looks over any rejections.
You can call and find out who he is and have him to approve it or not
The HP will not decide in favor of the inspector just to back him or protect him.
An inspector can fail a car for any reason he feels is not safe or correct .That is to protect him
The HP can over ride that and there is no harm no foul to the inspector unless it is a blatant abuse of power
