new speedometer cable making noise

I bought a new speedometer cable for my 91 miata se and it is making noise and bouncing around. i took my gauges out and hooked it to my cable and spun it with a drill and it worked fine but when i install it in my car it bounces around and makes noise could it be the gear or what is going on? anyone had this problem?

Could be either the interface with the speedo itself or the tranny speedo gear.
