Question Infiniti G37S coupe w/6-speed manual

Anyone on the board ever owned one? I remember seeing a gutted one at autocross events a few years back.

We test drove one back when the SO was in the market, but don't remember much about it. It was an 'S', and I do remember the suspension being fairly stiff.

Yeah, they are relatively stiff for a "luxury" car... The G35 6spd I'm pretty sure came factory with 19" wheels and a "sport suspension" which was basically slightly stiffer springs and shocks.

It's a slightly larger 350z with a tiny back seat... most of the mechanical parts are identical.

Just general stuff...Performance, reliability, known issues, years/models to avoid, etc.

So basically there is a "G35-1" and "G35-2" kind of like the NB's.

    03'-04' is G35-1
    05'-07' is G35-2

All the automatics from 03'-07' and 6spds from 03'-04' are 280HP and use a VQ35DE motor. The 05'-07' 6spd uses a slightly different motor referred to as the "Rev Up" motor which puts down 298HP.

There have been a lot of issues with the Rev-Up motor with oil consumption and the complications of low oil levels from higher than expected oil consumption. They did a recall and replaced a lot of those Rev-Up motors. At this point, these cars are well over 100k miles, so either the engine has been fine or the engine has been replaced, and you get 18 extra HP.

There are slight differences in the appearances - the 05'-07' interior is a nicer design and less clunky than the 03'-04', I think there are also some slight bumper/lip differences.

The 06'-07' have projector headlights, the 03-05' don't.

The 03'-'04 6spds came with Brembo brakes, the rest don't.

If you're going to gut it and race with it, you'd probably be best off with an 03'-04' 6spd... I think you'll get the sport suspension, the brembo brakes, the solid 280HP motor, and it'll be slightly cheaper than the 05'-07', plus the clunky interior won't matter if you're going to gut it.

    0-60 is around 5.5-5.7 seconds, 1/4 mile is low 14's I think.
Not sure what the skid pad figures are.

I've had the whole suspension apart on mine, the components are pretty nice and light - mostly aluminum.

Wheel bearings tend to go out quickly on these - and you want to use TIMKEN replacements, the others fail pretty quickly. Lighter weight will probably help here.

Car drives very nicely, very composed under braking and cornering.

I'm the 2nd owner on mine, had it since around 35k miles, now approaching 196k...never had a major issue.

Typical issues: Window motor goes out every 3-5 years, NVH issues, suspension tends to wear out tires prematurely (inner tire feathering), engines develop leaky valve covers (Nissan designed it where you get to pay $500 to replace the whole valve cover instead of spark plug grommets)...that's about it...pretty easy fixes for the most part... custom alignment would probably take care of the tire feathering issue.

Common upgrades are intakes and plenum spacers. The plenum spacer was proven on a dyno to be good for 12whp, and they are relatively cheap. You could get a 280HP motor, throw the spacer on there, and probably be pretty close to the 298 the "Rev-Up" motors put down.
