    Default Inspection & CEL

    Long story short I got tagged this weekend by Central Texas' finest revenue generators in the Murano, speeding and registration out. Problem is the CEL is on due to Nissan's shitty CVT, the code is from the stepper motor supposedly malfunctioning. It's not. No I don't care, shifts fine and will cost a new transmission to fix. It is a pain in the ass to get it inspected, which is why my registration is out and why it's tagged onto the bullshit ticket that I can't fight.

    Here's the process, the CEL cycles on & off randomly. We are waiting for it to clear to get it inspected, but if I clear it with one of those handy OBD2 readers it will put it in a 'not ready' state, is this correct? Is it possible to clear it and get it inspected? Apologies I don't have time at the moment to wade through all teh conflicting information on the intewebs so i'm throwing it here hoping someone will google this for me

    You can have some codes and still pass. The transmission code should not effect inspection.

    I always thought any steady CEL would fail an inspection?

    hmm... now that i'm thinking about it more I just remembered it used to throw a fuel pump sensor code years ago, which I replaced twice now, but the gauge is still floating since then. I guess I should make sure that code isn't back and not worry about it.

    Your friends at Vatozone will pull codes for you for free.

    Yea I had one of those bluetooth readers I used before, but I'm pretty sure either a dog ate it or it exists in another dimension after the move.

    Just go buy a code reader….Harbor Freight has them.
    Then you can clear your own codes, and also it will tell you when its ready for inspection.

    Rogue is right, as usual. Mine was cheap and I've used it many, many times. If you can clear the code and put enough miles on it before it comes back, you'll be good to go.

    Are these any more useful than the $10 ones on amazon? **for my use(s) of course. I'm a cheap ass and this BS ticket is going to cost me near $300 as it is.

    I have one for the MINI, but it's a proprietary tune flasher...i think (i've never tried it on other cars to read codes)

    Edit: I see it now: emissions readiness check seems to be the extra $70.

    The rules are:
    1. No Codes
    2. Some Emissions Readyness codes maybe incomplete. On a '99 two (2) at most maybe incomplete.

    Transmission-related Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC)
    If your vehicle has a transmission-related Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC), please read the important steps below and contact the Waiver Station in your area for more information.



    Transmission DTC repairs can range from $1500 to $3000, although some types may be cheaper (e.g., a transmission speed sensor problem). A waiver may be issued if diagnosis shows the extent and cost of repair to be unreasonable. Contact your DPS Waiver Station to set up an appointment. Make sure to bring your repair receipt showing the cost of repairs required to correct the transmission DTC. Only diagnosis and repair estimates from a Recognized Emissions Repair Facility (RERF) or a dealership will be accepted to qualify for this type of waiver.

    As luck would have it the CEL turned off a half hour ago so my smart wife pulled into the first inspection place and it passed

    I ended up having to cover some weird shifts at work and haven't had time to mess with it so that's nice. I'm going to get a new bluetooth OBD2 reader and keep it away from the dog this time. Jim thanks for the heads up about teh Transmission exemption. Think i'll hook that up for next year.
