Definitely a scam! :ncool: If your bank or credit card has a real problem they will call you or send you something in writing, never through email.

Yeah... I got something similar a few weeks ago. Interesting thing to note... on the included link to go update your info, right click and select properties and see where that link will really take you to.

    Uh... DO NOT do that.

Many of those spoof websites are set up with browser attacks and will install malware (spyware, keystroke loggers, backdoors, etc) on your system.

You should never click on those links to see where they will take you. If you have, you'll want to run SpyBot Search & Destroy, The Cleaner, Ad-Aware, etc... to make sure your system is clean. Oh, and make sure you are on the RIGHT Ad-Aware site - www.lavasoft.de is a good one. There are copycat names out there that actually INSTALL spyware.

    OK... [ ON]

If you'll note.. I said right-click and see where the link actually points to... I never said to follow the link... If you right-click and select properties, it will show you the REAL link it would take you to.

Many times they will start with http://www.ebay.com or paypal.com or whatever the flavor of the day is but embedded in the URL will be a redirect to another web site...

That redirect could be in unicode, double, triple, and quadruple encoded unicode... decimal notation... or other types of obfuscation to make it look like you are going to the real web site when in fact you are being redirected.

The bad part is that if you don't have your browser patched and up to date then you may see what you think is the real URL in the browser address bar but you'll really be on another site. Even worse - if you aren't up to date then the little padlock down in the corner could show you are connected to paypal.com, eBay, or whatever site when you really aren't. Hell... some of the phishing sites even have their own certificates for doing SSL so you'll see the padlock. How many times has any of us ever clicked on the padlock to verify the web site certificate to see if it really is for the correct site?

Hell, it's gotten bad enough that when I get a payment notification from PayPal or an auction notification or member message from eBay in an email that I don't click on them any more. I simply go to the PayPal website and log in from there or go to eBay.com and go to "My eBay" to check on things.

Whatever happened to the days of simple phishing from Mr. Mutumbo and his Nigerian 419 scamming friends?

They have a lot of problems with e-mail scams for E-bay. If you go to the link in the e-mail the address will not have the correct ending that ALL E-bay sites are supposed to have. I almost fell for one like that, I clicked on it and the webpage came up. I quickly realized it was a scam when it had questions like "what is the password to your bank account and pin number" and other very personal important info they would never need.

Yeah, I missed part of it... big deal... You should still be aware that it's easy to encode a redirect URL that looks like the real thing.
