the first couple gens of GoPro's are very cheap in the used market, and they work great. I still use my Hero2 with great results. You can probably post a WTB on some FB groups and get one with a mount for well under $100.
I'd like a camera setup for the car - I think.
But I don't want to spend GoPro $$$$ to see if this would be a cool addition.
Amazon has several options that share similarities in size and such but I've never heard of any of them.
Anyone got one of the TCB approved ones? Love it? Hate it? What ya got?? TIA

Funny, I just asked VegiMike about this earlier, this is from him: http://www.ebay.com/itm/GoPro-HERO3-...item4ae945702b
This camera can be remote controlled by racechrono pro and also can embed the data into the video. racechrono pro is $20, that camera is $150. You would also need a mount. Thinking about a rollbar mount.

EDIT: Micro SD card and shipping not factored in that price above. FYI.

Lots of hobby guys use a GeekPro (GoPro copy) and don't have any complaints, no personal experience though. I have a GoPro 3+ Black edition, and I love it. I use a roll bar mount.

I am still using my Hero 1. It still works great. I have two Swann Freestyle HD's. One of them died early, the other one is still working. They were (are) OK, but not as good as the Hero 1.
I also use my iPhone 4 with Harry's Lap Timer Pro. Sometimes, I actually get it to work. On the track I have better luck that at autocrosses.

This one has good reviews on Amazon, and it's cheap!

The ebay refurbished Hero3+ Silver are cheaper then most of used ones I saw on craigslist. I should receive mine it tonight. I had previously bought a Chinese knock-off by DBPower (http://www.amazon.com/DBPOWER-Waterp.../dp/B00PF9MTJ6) which is SJ4000 based. It's not bad for $60 i thought the video looks good but the software for controlling it from my phone complete crap and I bought the GoPro so i could use it with RaceChrono.POS Racing, I still have the knock-off camera and a suction cup mount I can bring to SCCA this weekend for you to try it out. I think the full setup would be around $97.82 to buy everything new from Amazon with free shipping (Camera + Mount + SD Card).
Just bought a Sony HDR-MV1 and Sony RM-VPR1 Remote Control. Added a 12v wired power supply. Best in-car video ever. The price isn't bad, particular when you consider the flexibility and quality.

Somewhat related but is anyone using apps for overlays? (G meter, lap time, gps track? etc?)

I've got a Garmin VIRB XE, and I like it. It's in the same price range as the current gen GoPro, however.
The video editing software is easy to use, meaning you really don't need to know anything about video editing to get good results out of it.
Garmin has an iPhone, Android, and Windows phone app for controlling it, but my Android version is too old, so I haven't tried the app.
It pairs with my bluetooth OBD dongle (OBDlink LX) and captures OBD data that can be displayed in the video.
I am using, or trying to use, Harry's Lap Timer. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-j149Ob-Vtg

I use an iPod and TrackAddict (it's like Harry's). Really good coaching tool.
Built my own mount for cheap:
http://www.miataturbo.net/build-thre...6/#post1100556
Quality is good:
I've had:
1. Swann - Aussie GoPro copy $$ - OK lasted 1 1/2 years. too much heat
2. ReplayXD - nice metal $$$ - Good picture, lasted 1 1/2 years, too much heat
3. MetroFlash - $ w/ WiFi - same resolution , so far 1 year, works great
Also check out Mobius, or just use your phone.

I'm on my 3rd year with a Swann Freestyle HD. It does overheat & shutdown sometimes sitting on grid for AutoX, but it's been rock solid on track days. My biggest problem is syncing the Video to the GPS overlay. Swann has a different model with GPS tracking... that may work better.
I've also attempted using my Samsung Galaxy S6, but it doesn't seem to ping (or whatever it does) the satellite at a sufficient time interval for Autox. Maybe there is a setting, but I can't find it. Or, it could be that I'm using free software instead of paying for a quality program![]()
Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I use this for my normal commute dash cam. It's super cheap, in quality and price, but the video quality is fantastic. No additions, just barebones loop video, priced accordingly.
I have mine set to record in 10 minute increments and it rewrites the oldest file, I get about a week of commute on a 32GB card, 1080p. Can use it as dash cam to and from the track and pull the video when you get home. No fiddling with it.
Haven't autocrossed in awhile, but when I do i'll use this instead of the gopro. No fiddling and worrying if the damn thing is recording, it's always on when the cars running.

Capacitor model is supposedly better for Texas since there have been reports of the cheap chinese batteries asploding on hot days. The capacitor model fixes this, but obviously it needs to stay wired to record.
Edit: if you're curious of the video quality I can upload some to youtube.
