Actually, we could help. I try to find time to walk the perimeter in each heat, but I think I'm the only one.
I have other issues to bring before the safety god; I will mention this too.

Still not sure why so many of you think corner workers were the cause of the long event last Sunday, IMHO the course was the key problem.

It was a fun course but it was scheduled on the wrong event, since it was know in advance that Dr. Bob was bringing 40 of his closest SAE buddies.

I don't. But the quality of Corner Work can always be improved. Last Sunday. The Sunday before that. Three years ago on a windy Sunday at Mineral Wells as Ms. Burns came flying down the back stretch only to stop dead because I had missed a down cone...

No doubt, and the course designer has had that explained to him ad nauseum. I don't think that will happen again.

Agreed. Esp toward the beginning of the track, there wasn't time to fix a cone if driver A knocked it over on his second time through the loop. Driver B would be coming right on his tail.

This led to one corner worker VERY nearly getting hit by a red S2000. It would have been the worker's fault for running out, but the course design was definitely a contributing factor.

Don't get me wrong I did really enjoy the course, and with fewer participant I'm sure would could have gotten at least 4 runs on it!

Just for the record 3 runs make me sad!

You are correct, Sir! Tommy will be suitably pummeled at the board meeting for this, but I am looking for any and all improvements we can make. If there is a concern about corner working, are there things we can do to address the issues?

Personally, I don't think this should be added to the Safety Stewards duty. The are focused just on safety issues, and probably don't want to distract them with operational issues. Granted OneThing and Peter and the rest of the crew have fixed many operational issues.

The other position I am contemplating implementing is "Time Keeper/Expediter" to try to get us to stay on schedule in the morning. How many times have we actually kept to the published schedule from the webpage

    "All times are Approximate
    Registration &
    Tech 7:30AM-8:30AM
    Novice Walk-Thru 8:40AM
    MANDATORY
    Drivers Meeting 9:00AM
    First Heat Cars
    to Grid 9:15AM "
If we can get first car out 45 minutes earlier, that gives us that much more time for additional runs. So don't lollygag

As to stopping by the board here, I tend to lurk a bit, but since I don't run with ER or S2k (and don't own a miata for that matter) I only tend to comment on the SCCA stuff that I am involved in.

    Regards

Personally, I would have preferred a course with more than ONE right turn. I felt like some nascar guy out there turning left all day.

Hey - I had the tire stagger setup properly. You should have had an easy time turning left

So... go buy a Miata. Keep lurking and commenting when you feel the urge. I'm glad to have you on our forum, giving us some of the inside scoop for the SCCA.

I might consider that when they start making them in XXL Actually, I probably only need to take big ol' grinder to the center console so that I have room for my right knee. My wife laughs at me every time we go to a car show, since I have to go sit in the new model miata and see if they changed the interior so that I fit comfortably.
I guess there is always prepared where "Interiors!?! We don't need no steenkin' Interiors" (with Apologies to the "Treasures of the Sierra Madre")

For now I'll just stick with my Z28 convertible. (Try to think of it as a Miata with a thyroid problem )

    Regards

I had that same problem and found the most beautiful solution*... perhaps there's hope for you yet!

Sounds like someone needs to testdrive a Miata that has had a foamectimy.

From my perspective as 3rd Heat Starter, I would say that the corner workers did the best they could without endangering themselves. The poor guy on the radio at the final slolam kept apologizing to control for not being able to get the cones back in position soon enough, but it wasn't their fault. I could have spaced the starts longer, but it would have been dark by the time the 4th Heat ended if I did. Live and learn.
What's left of a '96 Miata with stock clutch.
My car exceeds my driving ability. That's the only possible explanation.

    .
I don't, I was just pointing out something that can make an SCCA event run longer than most S2k events.

Not event specific, but here's something about corner working in general...

During our driver meetings, I mention that it is in the workers' best interests to be on top of the cone situation. The better they work cones, the less re-runs there are, and the faster they can come out of the sun. I don't know if it makes it through to anybody, but that's what I say.
