Have you ever seen BULLITT??????
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - Steve McQueen's car chase scene in the 1968 movie "Bullitt" still ranks as the most popular car chase scene in Hollywood history, according to a survey.
The detective movie, which featured McQueen driving a Ford Mustang in a high-speed chase through the streets of San Francisco, captured 40 percent of the votes in the survey. The email survey was conducted by Hagerty Insurance, a company that insures collectible cars, and had nearly 2,000 respondents.
"Bullitt" beat out its nearest rival, the 2000 remake of the movie"Gone in 60 Seconds," by almost a five to one margin.
The action comedies "Smokey and the Bandit" and "The Blues Brothers" took the third and fourth spots.
Rounding out the list, the original 1974 version of "Gone in 60 Seconds" finished fifth, followed by "The French Connection", "Ronin", "Vanishing Point", the recent remake of "The Italian Job" and "The Fast and Furious" which claimed the tenth spot.
Those films that just missed the cut included the "The Bourne Supremacy," the Ducati motorcycle scene in "The Matrix Reloaded" and "Days of Thunder" featuring Tom Cruise.
At least Ronin made the cut although, IMESHO, it should have been #1. That, and the remade Gone in 60 Seconds doesn't deserve the even be on the list.![]()

One of the best things about the older chase scenes (of which I've only seen Bullitt, French Connection, and Blues Bros.) as well as the one from Ronin was the lack of background music. IMO John Williams is the worst enemy of any Spielberg flick.
OTOH, the chase scene in the original Italian Job, DESPITE a wretched soundtrack, ranks above Smokey & the Bandit and Days of Thunder IMO.
Oh, did I mention...
THIS THREAD IS WORTHLESS WITHOUT HIGH-BITRATE VIDEO CLIPS!
...?
The best car chase scene of all time, IMHO, is in the Blues Brothers.
It's a tie between the chase through the mall (!), and the chase at the end as they're pursued to the Cook County Tax Assessor's office.
I happened to check out the new DVD recently. It's got additional scenes (right in the movie "director's cut" style) and a great "making of" documentary in which they admitted that the scenes of the bro's driving at 100+ on city streets under the el were not speeded up -- they actually drove them that fast. Apparently they could only close the streets for 10 minutes or so at a time, and only with hundreds of PAs scattered around every intersection. They also said that when they first shot it, it looked like it had just been speeded up, so they actually re-shot it with bystanders...
Awesome.

Ah, you gotta love the lines from the Blues Brothers.
Ronin isn't bad... but there are a couple of scenes where they had to enhance the shot in post. For example, there's a scene where an older Mercedes is doing a backwards 180 into forward motion... the editors had to sweeten the shot with crappy looking tire smoke added in after the fact... a very bad effect.Originally Posted by icepenguin66
Aye...first time I watched the Ronin DVD I noticed that, it has bugged me ever since. Also, all the cars have the drivers side wrong...for europe that is, which is wierd because I think it was filmed in europe, at least I think it was.
Still one of the best though.
Why is Fast & the Furious even on that list?? Heh...I just found a copy of the original Fast & the Furious at Wallmart in the dollar bin, havent watched it yet though. Had no idea that in addition to it being so bad, it was a remake. This one is like from the '50s I think, judging from the cover. I need to crack it open & check it out, if anything it probably has some cool old school car chases.

Next time you watch Bullit, count the number of hubcaps that fall off the Charger, then count the number of times you see the same vw, the same pontiac leMans, the same skid marks on the streets, and near the end of the chase, count how many times McQueen up shifts the 4 speedMustang... Hillarious when you are looking for this stuff. We used to show just the chase scene during the driving class we have with GM car and truck engineers... After the 12th viewing, I was kinda sick of it....

Yeah, I noticed that too. Although half the movie is based in the UK (IRA terrorists) so in those parts the right hand cars are correct.Originally Posted by Jiggerachi
