Shuhart's dad is really into RC racing boats.

He has several boats and a complete van dedicated to transporting all his toys.

The nut doesn't fall far from the tree.

They race over at McKinnish Park in Carrollton. Just west of 35 off of Sandy Lake Road. Next meet is 8-14-05 if you're interested. Thing is about these races is that 1/2 of the boats fail to make the finish line.

I still haven't found a site for it but somebody showed me a video the other day that blew my mind. They were RC unlimited hydroplanes....big deal you say. They weren't even turbine powered, just plain ol nitro. The trick is that the hull was hydrodynamic and also happened to make a decent amount of lift for the very negligible weight. They would zip around the lake a few times like a normal boat then take off straight up. They looked a little akward to fly as they had a very low polar moment around the pitch axis but they were very manuverable and could be landed back in the water or on the land (they had small wheels, but would 'float' on grass). I was amazed.

Then he showed me video of an RC helicopter competition routine. The things those people can do are insane. Can you say, 'inverted autorotation'? I knew you could. Unfortunately, it's pretty easy to tie up several grand in one of those I hear.

I remember those. I had a Tamiya Hornet when I was younger.

I've watched a couple of friends dump ridiculous money into RC cars, only to crash them or let them collect duts in a box somewhere.

That being said, I have always wanted a gas-powered RC helicopter...

You people are nuts! I think I'll do something a little easier on the wallet... like fund a team in F1.

Seriously, that looks like a lot of fun (all of it... boats, planes and cars), but I had no idea it was that $$$$.

I did electric off road racing back in the late '80s Only took a few races to realize it was like real racing, and the only way to win was $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Sold my car and all the parts to a coworker's kid. He wrecked it, and the last I heard, it was still collecting dust.

I used to be pretty serious into slot cars. As a teen I spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on them. It was all I had. It's like me spending $50,000 now.

I bought the HPI Rush stadium trck from Homerneedspeed a few weeks ago. Great fun. I getting better as a driver. Monkey (still working in the field) is wanting to buy one now so that we can race together.

In the early 80's I had an Associated 12E electric car. I worked the indor track that was on Grapevine Highway just south of North HIlls Mall. It was in the building that now has Airport Pawn (they have alot RC planes.) I really liked electric, but now havin driven a Nirto car there is no comparison. No stopping to charge batteries, worring about burning your motor, but you can run inside.

When I get better as a drive I think I'll try racing.
Hmm what is decent? Are we talking about your decent or my decent? I'm just curious because I don't want to offend anyone else's decent...

Hey, TC did you see Dave show some Pro off road R/C racing on Wind Tunnel? Pretty sweet.

There is a off road track south of Pennington that was running yesterday. I headed down West Park Way and just south of Pipeline there were a bunch of cars and trucks and screened tents and junk. I bare caught a glimpse of the track between all the junk. Looked like a big turnout.
