Thread: Question about oil use

    Default Question about oil use

Do you guys cars use a lot of oil?
I have not checked my oil in a while because I was checking it what I thought was too regularly, and it never seemed to change, but I checked today and it had none.
I seem to have misplaced my notes and forgot how much oil a 99 takes, does someone know off the top of your head.
I would do a search but I find that I never can seem to find what I am looking for , maybe its because I just dont know what I am doing.
    Thanks,
    Billy

No oil is typically not good for the health of the engine. Mine uses a little between changes. IIRC capacity is 3.8 qts.

Thats why I Freaked out when I saw there was not a drop, I have not seen any leaking on places that I park so I guess I just used it up.
I still dont know how I could go from not using any oil to using all the oil..
Anyhow its parked til tomorrow, I will put a few quarts in and then go get the oil changed, I just dont have time to do it this week.
    Thanks for the info Sammm.
BTW, car is still running great...once the header settled in it sounds so good, I really enjoy driving it.
Its like that Honda commercial that came out a couple of years ago where the guys would get into the car and drive to the end of the driveway to check the mail.
I make excuses to drive the Miata.
BTW, I will be watching the oil closely from here on out to see what is going on, I have been driving it hard at high RPM's I guess thats making it burn a lot more oil than I expected.

Mine uses some too. Carefull with putting too much oil in, that can be bad too. Try one quart, then see where it is on the level. Remeber the difference between empty and full on the dipstick is one quart. That doesnt mean the engine doesnt have a drop of oil in it, but you should look at adding some. Mine doesnt leak, but just burns some off. If I am going to an autoX, I will top it off. Also make sure you are on level ground, that can impact the level of the oil enough to make it look empty.

Unless you're using some really cheap oil that shouldn't be a problem. I beat the hell out of my car on a daily basis and have no oil problems. You may want to check everything out and make sure nothing is wrong.

    No pressure or anything.....
Or you could show up to an autocross event.
Just make sure your car has oil in it.
    No more Miata

Did you find any reason it was that low on oil? I wouldn't think a car that new would use that much oil.
