The secret to mountain biking is the same as the secret to skateboarding, skiing, rollerblading, etc. - you're going to fall hard sooner or later, so learn how to fall properly early on. It is a skill that will not go unused.

If I remember correctly, the guy in the picture kept his legs... Zanardi's were torn off and already gone by the time the meds got to him.
That is Stan Fox in 92. His feet were actually ok except for bruises. IIRC he had a concussion. He went on to race again, but was killed in a street car accident when he was hit by a drunk driver in Australia.
