I didn't know you mounatin biked, sammmmm. Leadfootjon and I just got back from Northshore in Grapevine this morning. Decided it was either time to start riding the bike again or sell it for race tires.

Hadn't been up there in almost two years. I was amazed at how little the trail had changed. I'm was also amazed that it didn't hurt nearly as much as I thought it was going to. I guess walking three miles every other weekend is good for something. :P

Yep, I've been mountain biking for at least 9-10 years now. Northshore sure is ambitious if you haven't been out in awhile! Maybe we can all hook-up sometime and take a ride!

    Less ambitious than Cedar Hill.

Funny thing - I've owned one bike or another for 10 years now, although I haven't been riding actively the last couple of years.

Yeah, we'll have to hook up some time. Have you ever been to Tyler State Park? Some of the best riding I've done that's still a day trip from DFW. I'm not in any shape to tackle it yet (lot of elevation changes and some really good climbs out there, with some equally good downhills), but I'd like to go back in the fall when the weather starts cooling down again.

In the meantime, leadfoot and I are going to try to hit Northshore once a week or so till we can get back into some semblance of shape. :)

I've been thinking of buying a bike, but not sure how much I want to spend or what I want. I'd like something I could haul to SCCA events. If PF can ride his around, it must be ok for Ramey and the other green hats too!
If I get a little bike like Peter, then it won't be much fun on a trail.

Any suggestions? Wheelchairs and walkers are out of the question!

Why don't you get one like you had when you were a kid??

    Cute. :P

Depends on what you intend to do with it. If you only intend to use it for riding around at events, I'd head down to WalMart and buy the cheapest rig I could find. Expect to spend under $200. It'll be heavy and it won't be worth much off road (nor will the parts stand up to muvh abuse if you decide to take it off road), but it'll be fine for riding around at TMS or wherever.

If you actually want a bike that can stand up to some moderate off road riding, then I'd skip Wally World, head down to your local independent bike shop (Bicycles, Inc. is a great choice and has a couple of branches in Arlington now that you're closer to the metroplex) to look for a real bike. Trek, Specialized, Schwinn, and Cannondale are probably the four biggest manufaturers, and you can get a decent entry level bike in the $300-400 range. In this price range you're likely going to get a "rigid" bike (no front or rear suspension), or one with an inexpensive front fork, but no rear suspension. A bike in this price range from one of the major manufacturers should hold up to moderate trail useage, but may require some minor upgrading if you start to do more off road riding.

Of course, I'm basing much of that off of what I observed in bike shops a few years ago when I was still riding (and buying parts) regularly. The price of technology comes down very rapidly in the industry, however, so $300-400 today will likely buy you what would have cost $700-800 two or three years ago.

As for how much you can spend, the sky's the limit. I've personally owned two bikes that cost over $2000 new (including the 5-year-old Specialized FSR-XC I'm currently riding), and I used to ride with a guy who custom-built a $6000 titanium full suspension bike.

Then again, I started riding 10 years ago on a Roadmaster from WalMart. I decided I'd buy a cheap bike first and see if I liked the sport. I did, and after about 8 months I bought an entry-level $350 Specialized Rockhopper, which I rode for a couple of years before I started spending big bucks on the hobby.

That is what it really comes down to. If you plan on using it only on a paved surface, then a cheapy Wally World or Target bike is fine. If you plan on abusing it offroad, the sky is the limit! Visit your local bike shop and look around. Test drive them (Bikes Inc. over hear on Bowen will let you take them for rides). You'll find different bikes have different riding postures. Some more aggressive than others. Hard to explain, but you will feel the difference!
I bought my first mountain bike used (a Miyata BTW!), and am on my 3rd one. It's a full-suspension GT RTS-3 (dinosaur in weight and technology compared to the new models!). I have abused the sh*t out of it and have only broke it a few times. I tacoed a wheel last summer (being tired and riding in the heat is bad!) and thought I had broke my arm at the time! Yes, I was wearing my helmet. Always do!

So this is just like AX! Poor college kids spend $$$ on all kinds of things I guess.

Well, the path across the river from the apartment looks like fun and is paved. Cheap is where I will start, but I still haven't figured out how to haul a full-sized bike on my already overloaded AX trailer...may have to do the Altiain Big Box mod and put a bike rack on the roof of my trailer. Don't really see using it at every event, but I just about walked myself stupider at the Bus Lot

Thanks for the input. Gee Sammmmmm do you wear your full-face white helmet to protect your pretty face or the cavity behind it? :P

I rode Rowlett Creek Preserves about 3 days ago, and there was this 4-5 foot copperhead sitting in the middle of the trail that I just barely stopped about 2 feet in front of.

There is a bike shop in Garland, Don Johle's Bike World on Broadway.. Don is a new Miata owner (96M edition) and if you go in and spark up a Miata conversation, he just might cut you a deal.

I got a Gary Fisher Tassajara about 6 weeks ago from him.
SOLD: 92 silver w/hardtop, voodoo, Kosei wheels, pine tree air freshener, and some JR stuff.
SOLD: 99 silver; the old Goodwin supercharged car with gobs of power and everything else on it.
    SOLD: 95 triple black; stock
SOLD: 99 black and tan; loaded and clean; just hit 50k miles.
SOLD: 2006 Copper Mica Red; stock.
FOR SALE: 2007 Galaxy Grey Grand Touring; stock; 38k miles.
