ehh, better than the 12 gallon tank on the ST. I'm at the gas station pumping premium every 200 miles......
I just bought a Suburban to replace the 92 pickup as the family utility vehicle. Decided to read the manual this evening. Let me cut to the interesting part: fuel capacity- 42 gallons!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I plan to fill it once, and sell it when it is empty. Holy gas tank, batman!!

So will it go about 300 miles on 42 gallons of gas?
A friend of mine had a Ford Excursion that held 80 gallons. It was pain in the pocketbook filling it up.

My Wrangler with the 31 gallon aftermarket tank was sticker shock the first couple of times I filled it up. But then you realize it is costing you the same amount, you just don't fill up as often. Also it gives you a chance to start looking for cheaper prices because you can go longer between fill ups. I was able to avoid gas spikes several times because I paid attention to what was going on.
Back when gas was over $4/g, I started filling up the Tahoe (30g cap) every 200 miles, as I would have heart palpitations every time it cost me $100 to fill the tank.
Yeah, that first $100 fill up sucks big green donkey dicks.
What year Suburban? The upside to that gargantuan 42 gallon tank is that it pairs nicely with decent highway gas mileage (no, really). My folks had '93, '95, and '99 'Burbs and they would routinely get about 18-19 mpg on the highway, at 75 mph. Dallas to El Paso on one tank was a distinct reality on road trips. When they had the '95, I remember dropping 41 gallons in it for the princely sum of $35. Ah, those were the days.
IMO, GM screwed up when they cut the tank down to something like 25 gal, and some country gas stations make it a PITA to fill up the whole tank when they limit your purchase to $100. Fuckers.

How much MPG does it cost to haul all that weight around? 6 lb per gal, .1 mpg per 100 lbs.

We've had an '01 Yukon XL (suburban) since '03. Had 25k on the clock when we got it, 177k now. Did a couple of minivans with the kids before going to the yukon and we've loved it. It came with a towing package and aftermarket oversized wheels/tires so only gets around 12mpg city/16mpg hwy (seems like everyone I know with suburbans get around 16/19). The kids are both grown and gone to college now and it's my wife's daily so not exactly the most economical. Think it's a 35 gallon tank and we usually have to fill it up about every 7-10 days at $100 a pop... ugh. That's how I got a miata in 2008 when gas first hit $4 a gallon. I got the miata, wife drove my car and the yukon sat unless it was needed.
Don't really need it most of the time now but I'm not sure I want to get rid of it. It still comes in real handy for cargo, hauling up to 7 people or towing my utility trailer around. Been kicking around the idea again of buying a cheap used economical car for my wife to drive back and forth to work. Thinking maybe a VW jetta TDI, mazda 3 or ???. It'd be a no brainer if I were willing to part with the yukon but not sure the fuel savings alone would offset the car/insurance/maint/etc to make it that worthwhile this time.

When I was in the 124th Cavalry, Texas National Guard, we had an M88 Heavy Recovery Vehicle. It was powered by a Continental AVSI-1790-6A, that’s 1790 cid of V-12 gasoline engine rated at 980 HP at 2800 rpm. The fuel tank held 400 gallons. IIRC, typical fuel mileage was about 0.5 mpg. Later models had twin turbo charged diesel engines with even more horsepower, and a larger fuel tank.
On the track, I am fearless.
If you were as slow as me, you wouldn't be afraid either.

Its a 97. Really like it so far. Bought from my elderly uncle who is no longer driving. One owner, 126k miles, all service done at the dealer. Looking forward to the dual a/c in the summer.

The blasthole drilling rig my team designed has a range of engine options, but the largest one is a 52L V12 turbodiesel that makes 1650 horsepower at 1800 RPM (and over 6100 ft-lbs of torque at 1400 rpm).
Depending on how the machine is optioned, it will burn anywhere from 30-45 gallons per hour.
And we make one range of machines even bigger than this one.

The M1A1 Delta Heavy (73 ton uparmored Abrams tank) I drove in the Army had a 1500 HP turbine engine and a 440 gal tank. I took 8 gallons to start it and it would get .6 MPG according to the spec sheet YMMV. Sometimes I would burn through all the gas in about 18 hours. That's about 24gal/hr. It also took synthetic engine oil that I was told went for about $40/qt. The engine held 18 qts and one engine I had would burn that up every day. That's $720 in oil a day.
The M88's cone-cerned was talking about have engines the size of a Miata. I remember seeing a few of the twin turboed engines pulled out for maintenance. The turbos themselves are bigger than a basketball.

Nice! You can't kill a Chevy V8 - an old boss used to run his Suburbans up over 300K before he got rid of them. The only fail point I know of is the 4-speed auto. I've never seen one last past 150K, but a good shop can rebuild one and have it back on the road for very reasonable money.
