Search M.net there are tons of articles detailing how to clean this. THe hole for the egr to the intake clogs with carbon and trips the light.
Well just got back from La.
The light tripped twice while I was gone and I got it checked at Autozone, they said that it was "EGR flow excessive".
So I am guessing that I need a new EGR, I am also getting a black smoke out of the tailpipe.
Since I have never had this go out on any other car does anyone have any insight on how to go about replacing this part?
Also where I might go to get one and if they are all the same or is there a preffered brand.
Thanks in advance.

Did Autozone give you the actual number of the code? With that number, any one of us can look up the exact procedure for diagnosing and solving the problem in the factory service manual.Originally Posted by Billy Blaze
Without the code, you're SOL, I'm afraid. Could be any number of things.
The next time the light comes on, do us a favor and get your local Autozoe to tell you the actual code number.

I won't say I told you so, but.....
EGR Flow Excessive is the famous P0402. See this LINKIE
I was hoping is wasn't that
I guess it could be worse, thanks for the link Sammm.
I just Seafoamed the car a month or two ago, I guess it didn't help that much.
Sammm was yours smoking from the tailpipe when you rev'd the engine?
Thanks again.

So anyone else that has had this problem also had the black smoke coming out of the tailpipe?
I am curious, just to know if this may be something else or a symptom of what is already wrong.

If it takes a long time to warm up, your thermostat could be stuck open. This causes the ECU to run the car too rich.

I did read the link, thanks again Sammm.
I just replaced the thermostat a few months ago but I guess it's cheap enough to do it again.
also just seafoamed the car a couple of months ago, but it was advised that I try that again first to see if it might ungunk itself.
So I plan on trying that again first and the T-Stat thing and if that does not work I guess I will tear into it and do it right.
I also have the 60K maint. coming up in 7K...can't wait for that....lol

Billy does you car take a long time to come up to temperature??
That was the symptom Sammm was seeing that signaled the need for a thermostat change!
Define long time...lol
I would say it takes about 10 minutes or so, but never really timed it.
I am going to do another Seafoam tomorrow, btw never buy that stuff from NAPA man are they proud of their stuff.

In that case, buy a couple cans of throttle-body cleaner (not carb cleaner) and read this - LINKIEOriginally Posted by Billy Blaze
Forget the SeaFoam for now.
