Thread: Torsen my rear

    Default Torsen my rear

    Anybody put in a Torsen?

How difficult is it? Is $750 a good price for the unit?

Paging Mr. Sammm Mr. Sammm please report to the white courtesy phone!

I do believe on your '93 you have to change a few things around to install a torsen!

That's about the going rate. Before Mazda-Heaven knew what they are worth, I got mine for $300. Swapping out the entire carrier assembly is the way to go. Only parts I replaced were the seals for the axle-stubs. I think we knocked mine out in 2-3 hours.

With the 1.6, I believe you need to replace the driveshaft and halfshafts as will.

You may be correct on that one Titus!

The diff isn't as easy or cheap as the braces or wheels, but it is certainly possible to update a pre '94 Miata to the '94 & later differential. The first thing to realize is that the diff is a larger, hopefully stronger unit. You'll need to change out the driveshaft, the whole diff, and the halfshafts. If it is at all possible, you want to get these parts used. When they're available, Mazmart sells kits with "everything you need" for $1000.

So, If I can track a unit down from a less knowledgable source, I need the Driveshaft, Pumpkin and halfshafts. Right?

Yes... The trick will be finding a less knowledgeable source that is knowledgeable enough to tell the difference between an Open and a Torsen!

It's on my list too, but until I break something, I'm not spending $$$, cuz I ain't got it. Shouldn't be too hard of a job though. Good luck, $750 is a good price.

What? You use a stock drive shaft, but you use the one off the Torsen doner car.

Were you running a 1990-1993 rear end in your car at the time of the swap??
