I too am from a Vette house heck I even had one of my own for 18 years. :afro:
I was trying to figure out why cars like the NSX and the Viper are considered an exotic, but the similarly priced Z06s (or ZR1s when we talk 15 year old cars) seem to fall short. It must be because they look so much like the regular (common) Vette. Yes the new body style catches your eye for a few months, but then it is just another Vette. A car like the NSX catches the eye of most all other drivers on the road, and gets the thumbs up from people from all walks of life. A 15 year old Corvette just doesn't get that type of attention (unless you count the "guys who drive pickup trucks" demographic ) .

Edit: You're probably thinking of someone else. I remember when those things came out they had one in the mall. Everyone was asking "how do you wash it?" The guy recommended brillo pads. I'm not kidding.

Shear production numbers come into play, Chevy sells a ton of Corvettes of all variations as compared to a Viper or an NSX (or even a Miata) so you are going to see a Corvette today but more than likely you will not see an Viper or an NSX. There have been about 1.3 Million Corvettes built since 1953. In 2002 Chevrolet sold 35,469 Vettes! Production figure Link!

How many NSX has Honda shipped to the US?

Once again, the NSX's never have impressed but I'm sure they are fine fine automobiles.......

    +1

While I have a lot of appreciation for the NSX, I've dreamed about owning a 911 since before I was old enough to drive. And with the price of the model I love the most (993, last of the air-cooled "real" 911s) dropping into the low $30s...

probably not all that much more than the NSX... One of teh managers at my office had a 92 NSX... Nice car, but he ended up seling it right about 55k miles, b/c the 60,000 mile service was something on the order of $2-3,000..

Air cooled certainly makes life simplier.. As long as you don't mind ~11qts of Mobil 1 each oil change

Where's Freud to decode?! 308 and NSX?! You have some um...well...unique taste. The 308 thing got old after one season of Magnum PI.

Guess I can't rag on ya too hard; I've been known to have some pretty odd tastes also.

Oh, and no offense to you guys, but I don't think anyone on here can comfortably fit into an NSX other than a few of us that are under the 150 lbs/ 6ft limits! Just for giggles, I'd love to see everyone try to get into one! That car makes the Miata feel like a Caddy inside!

Kinda like the people that don't consider the Miata a guys car or a formidable sports car. The motor in a ZR1 is far mor exotic IMO than a rebodied Civic that's been given a few extra ponies to bump it up to...no wait they still couldn't get to 300hp.

Granted the first gen NSX does look nice, in a stock Corvette kinda way, and it has had some great motorsports accomplishments but overall I feel the NSX falls more into the flop category with the Delorean instead of with the exotics.

A Z06 may be able to take an NSX intially but you have to keep in mind that since Chevy can't figure out how to put the correct brakes on the correct side of the car it won't be able to stop.............................................. .........

You've never driven a C5 Z06, have you? Granted, the interior is straight outta a rental Cavalier, but there's nothing wrong with the brakes.

    Actualy, I have :p

But I was referring to the C6 Z06 with left-sided brakes all the way around.

(and I should have added "after a while". Many owners have already complained hugely about it)

Been an interesting topic for sure with all good opinions but don't forget this.

Even if you could afford one, could you afford to own one? Not only insurance but also replacement parts. All the cars mentioned probably have astronomical prices on their parts.

Funny you mentioned that. You can pick up a decent first gen Viper in the $25-35k range yet if you smash the hood its gonna be around $10k from the dealer! The joys of huge complex single piece fibreglass hoods! This would also be the reason why the Vette did away with the one piece hood/front end design as did the new Viper. I don't think the NSX will have quite as bad a problem with replacement parts; you could probably substitute for other model Honda parts that are the same. My friend gets the brake pads for his 96 vette at Ford cuz a certian gen Cobra pads are the exact same pad/manufacturer yet the Vette pads cost around $100 more!

Doesn't the NSX have an all alluminium body?

BTW, change your avatar. That one just freaks me out!

it has an aluminum frame, dont know about the body panels. they may be aluminum as well, but im not sure.

I know just the /motor/ for the power antenna is around $680 from the dealer for the NSX. Body panels are about equal to a somewhat decent miata.

If you wanna get killed buy a '92 benz S420, never seen so many things go wrong with a car, and a single driver's seat alone is $8k.
