I was thinking the same thing. Trash the whole front bumper and put something on it that will not crumple at the sight of the first rock.

It's a disease. The Jeepster never did get restored... It sat in the garage until I was 9 before he sold it to make room for the '59 Corvette. After the Corvette, he added a 1956 GMC Suburban Carrier (A rather rare high end pick-up with a fiberglass bed), the 1966 Mustang GT Convertible that I previously posted pics of, a 1963 Studebaker Avanti (with factory supercharged V-, and a 1961 Bubble Top Impala. He still has the Vette, the truck, and the Impala. The others were sold to make room for and pay restoration costs of several old boats that have become his latest passion.

It was good meeting him, I shoulda just talked cars with him, instead jumping all over "pump it up" at the b-day party.

Not to mention after 2 years the instrument gauges started freaking out and the transmission started slipping.

You know, I jokingly told her that once and she reminded me of how I made $1200 a month working in radio for the first few years we were married. How soon we forget!

Regarding taking new trucks off-road: I bought a brand new loaded Toyota Tacoma (V6, 4wd, ext cab, all the bells & whistles) for something like $25k back in '95 (certainly comparable to a $30k truck today), and it was covered in mud before the end of the first week.

Amen to that. One of the things that I loved about my Tacoma was the fact that it had steel bumpers. A day of thrashing around in the woods didn't leave them all torn up like plastic or painted bumpers.

They were also pretty impervious to damage from accidentally running over small trees. Not that I ever did anything like that.

    nuthin that's anywhere 2,000lbs....

I was figuring that with an actual frame and axles it might be higher than that.. Up till now the wrangler's issue has always been short wheelbase... that one is obviously a lot longer.

I'm thinking of something smaller more nimble to eventually replace the suburban.. but it'll need to tow at least 5,000 lbs... (small cars or boats)
