Unless you're just intent on doing it yourself, can't spare the car for a few days and have totally lost your mind, Mr. Boyd at Miata Solutions (dot net) might be your best bet for the clutch.

Is it a PITA to accomplish? I was hoping it could turn into a learning experience for board members that have never seen it done assuming we have someone on the board who has done it before and is willing to assist.

If you have use of a nifty transmission jack like the one Gary has, you can probably pull it off without alienating friends. The key is having the person (or persons) that have done it before who know the magic combinations of universal joints, wobblers and extensions for breaking the top couple of bolts loose...

Plus I'd bet his intallation charge would be less than your possible bar tab at "On the Boarder" (maximum of 5).

I am because I didn't see where the bar was an option although beer could be provided at the hacienda

It's a tough crowd this morning. hee hee

    Let's review:
    1. The job can be accomplished with a tranny jack and an experienced supervisor.
    2. We have not established anyone who can fill the role of established supervisor.
    3. Feeding the troops is no problem.
    4. Miata Solutions or Gary can perform the job but it will cost 350+

Like Onething I am on vacation (for 10 weeks) and have some time available and was trying to keep my membership in the TCB

Even I paid Stevan Boyd to put a clutch in my '92. It's well worth it, especially if you don't have an AC'd garage to work in this time of year.

Okay...I will buy parts one month and have them installed the next month if you think it's worth the time savings and the avoidance of hassle.

I installed my clutch and flywheel by myself. It was a PITA, and it took a long time. Id probably have Mr. Boyd do it next time. Although if it really came down to it, I could help if it was the right time.

Yep... from what I have heard, it is a dirty back-breaking job that doesn't benefit much from extra hands. I suspect it would be easier for you to get people to help you with an engine swap than a clutch.

I've done it a few times too many... The easiest was when I could stand under the car, I got to do it that way twice. It made everything so much easier and it really didn't take very long. That could have also been b/c of all the experience I obtained from doing it on my back

I've done two of the three clutch/flywheel jobs on my car (don't ask) and even with experienced help and a nifty tranny jack they both sucked nuts. I wouldn't hesitate to pay $350 for someone else to do it.

It will be the best $350 you ever spend. Can you do it yourself...sure. Will you hate yourself half way through....Oh yeah. I have a lift and it still sucks! It is hot, dirty and frustrating as something always goes wrong.

Oh and you had better add cooling. You live in Texas afterall.

$350 sounds like a good deal! There were no deals like that when me and 2 friends did the clutch on my car back in Orlando. We didn't even have a tranny jack (bench press the tranny and have the others move it to the side so your head doesn't get crushed). It took about 6-7 hours with 3 people and we forgot to tighten up the bolts on the slave cylinder. That left my wife stranded at a toll booth on the FL turnpike a couple days later.

If you do plan on doing it yourself, make sure you have impact tools and lots of extensions and U-joints.

First purchases in June towards FI:

    1. Motor mounts
    2. Happy Meal
    3. PWR radiator
    4. PPF

Gonna get them all at once. Everyone of them can be installed and used now before FI.

BTW...watch the Braves/Cubs game Sunday at Wrigley. I will be in section 427 between home and first with the "Go Mavs" banner
