Default New PC - Have questions

I got a new PC. The MAC was tempting but I already had a bunch of PC software and needed a lot of storage.

    Anywho..

I got a pretty decent deal on a ---> HP Pavillion A1330N I got it for $450 on a close out at Office Depot.

I wanted to transfer were my 120gb hard drive from my old PC.
The new PC has a Serial ATA drive and my old drive is IDE. No problem I figured as there is a spare IDE controller on the MB. It works, sort of.
Windows sees the drive and I'm able to access all the data fine.

    The problem:
When booting, the system sees both the ATA and the IDE drives as master. I can get around this by going to the boot menu and selecting the ATA drive but that's a PITA.

I tried the different jumper settings on my IDE drive. Master or cable select and it's a master drive, slave and it isn't detected at all. I tried to see if I could jumper the ATA drive but it doesn't have any jumper settings that I can see.

I know I can get an IDE/ATA adapter or an external USB or firewire case but I'd rather not spend another $40

    Anyone got any other ideas?

Go into the BIOS and select your SATA drive as the first one in the boot order. Also put the IDE one as the last device in the boot order. Then you won't have to pick any more. Since it's an HP, I believe you have to push F2 right when it boots to get into the BIOS. Let me know if you have problems.

He asked for help, let's not turn this into a PC vs. MAC war.

If the SATA and IDE buses are separate, then it's possible to have a master on each. I don't think it's possible to have a slave without a master (true on so many levels), so rejump your old IDE to master unless there's another device on that bus. Then set the boot order per NF's instructions.

(It is possible to install and run all your Windows software on an Intel Mac, BTW. Not trying to start a war, just dispel misinformation.)

The hyper flux capacitator on the crucial xenon drive has blown its fusion warp gear and I can't get it to hyperanthriate.

    Anyone got any other ideas?
    No.

    You're welcome

BTW SATA's are master on their own channels. Hence no jumper.
I looked at the PC specs and I wasn't sure if the IDE HDD was on its own cable. If so, set to master. If not, (ie CD-ROM and HDD on same cable) then set one to master and other to slave, or set both to cable select.

Is it one of the Samsungs or Segates? Also, are you getting an "Imminent hard drive failure" message or is ti something else?

Samsung and no problem until I ran the proprietary hardware scan. The error said to cal HP immediately. The error code told them it needs replacement.

    Nice...

Gotta love the S.M.A.R.T. technology in those drives... They monitor their own health and will let you know when the drive is starting to fail so you can replace it before it actually dies and you lose data.
