Xmas 06: GameCube vs. PS2?

(Yeah, I know this is the year of Wii vs. PS3 vs. Xbox360, but all are beyond the budget.)

Family friend on a tight budget wants to surprise a good kid for xmas. Age 10, so Xbox is out. I can't recommend a handheld (DS or PSP) after seeing so many kids tuning out the outside world.

So... other than a couple of kid-oriented exclusive titles, is there any reason to seek out a GameCube over a PS2?

My 11 year old has a PS2 and never plays it..... Now she is all about her Nintendo DS, it's all she plays.

I would say Gamecube for a kid. I am pretty sure it has more kid oriented games. And family games that are more fun. From what I hear it is the Wii minus the cool controler the Wii has. Plus GC games are at $29 while PS2 games are still in the $49 range for new games.

Oh I forgot to mention, I do have an original xbox that I would let go for around the price of the Gamecube. PM me if you want more info!

+1 on the DS. Wonderful system. Very kid friendly. Quite affordable.

I have to admit some of the "edutainment" titles for the DS have my attention. Just don't wanna create another "Gameboy zombie".
