    Question Questions for the Audiophiles

I am in the market for a new A/V stereo reciever. I am leaning towards the Onkyo TX-SR604 based on features and of course price. Has anyone recently bought a new receiver? If so, which one and why.

The other thing I'm interested in is a media player. A buddy of mine has the Linksys Media Player that allows him to play his PC music (MP3's) thru his stereo via wireless network. I gotta have it!

I've been extremely pleased with my JVC... But it was a toss up between it and the Onkyo then, and it still would be now.

Depends on the context. Cheaper than the Mini your wife wants? I believe at least a few of the models they offer are.

I've always bought Yamaha receivers. I like them, I've never had a problem, but I really couldn't give you a factual basis on why I would buy one over an Onkyo.

Just make sure you buy last years model to save some money. Most people don't need the latest rendition of Dolby.

Don't fall for all the gimmicky DSP modes (I know Yamahas have a lot of them) because you'll never use them.

I just recently bought the Yamaha HTR-5860.
I love it, it has a mic to pink noise the room...it sets it up to be optimal whereever you place the mic.
Also has a ton of features including it's XM ready.
I think its a 7.1 surround sound with DSP capabilities.
I am using JBL surround speakers with it and its awesome 8 speakers total including powered sub.
I was really shocked at all the features of this unit, price when I bought it was around 500.

    Happy Hunting!

My harman/kardon has the same auto level setting with the white noise and a mic built in to the remote. GREAT feature.

Yamaha is good stuff, no doubt. My first 'good' stereo was all Yammie, except for my cassette deck which was Nakamichi. (Pre-CD era)

No HDMI inputs (must have for me), but looks like a nice unit.

The Onkyo has the mic and setup routine as well. That is a nice feature.

I have owned 2 Okyo receivers and one Denon. I don't think I will buy anything but those two until I can afford the really high end stuff. I have been very pleased with my latest Onkyo, buit will soon be upgrading the whole system to DLP and HDMI. I will always keep my B&O front speakers though

In looking up the Yamaha that Billy mentioned, I found this Sony on Amazon that seems to be a real steal (current price is $299) and it has the HDMI inputs that you are looking for Sammm. LINK HERE

Uhh... yeah... but Sony sucks. I'll spend the extra $200. BTW, Sammm... I looked at the Onkyo... That's good stuff. If I had to buy one today, I'd snag one.

+1 ... TV's are one thing. Stereo equipment another. For another $70 I can get the Onkyo.

I just run my HDMI stuff into the TV and run a fiberoptic cable back into the stereo....works pretty good so far.
I can see how you would want that if you have sattelite though as I use mine mostly for movies.
Let us know what you end up with.

After reading all the audio-forum stuff I could find, I just ordered the Onkyo SR604. After researching, I was thinking about getting the Pioneer VSX-1016. Looks like a nice unit, but Pioneer doesn't seem like high-end, or even middle-end home stereo equipment to me. That said, they seem to be highly regarded.

That's exactly what I do. Don't get fooled into buying the high priced fiber cable though. At frys they have a ton that are $70-90 that are for "home theater" but just down the isle you'll find the TOS link cables that are $12 for 5'. All it's transmitting is 0's and 1's, so no need for big burly insulated cables.
