    Default Daytona 500

Shirt off, 11 Busch lights in my belly, cig hangin out the corner of my mouth. Dang ole Dale Jr. man! That's right Nascar fans, it's race day!

Anyone else watch yesterday? It was pretty cool when Air Force One made the slow circle before landing.

Best laid plans and all that . . .

I planned to leave church, come straight home and order pizza. Ended up having lunch with some friends at a really slow restaurant. While waiting for my food to come, I got a call from a niece who was sitting in my driveway wondering where I was.

Long story short - got home turned on the TV just as they interview Mikey and saw the rest of the race while pretending to listen to my company

Watched the truck race this morning on SPEED

I'm going to have to resist the urge to delete this entire thread... :P

That's Un-Amurican, Altiain. I am not a huge Nascar fan myself, but it is such an event. [/quote]

I was a "roundy-round" race detractor (NASCAR, IRL, World of Outlaws, etc.), but I is reformed!

Seriously, I really didn't like NASCAR or IRL, but a couple of co-workers got me to try NASCAR, and I got them to watch a couple of F1 races. Well, we're both converts. I still think road racing is more difficult, but I can see why NASCAR and IRL is more of a spectator sport -- particularly for the fans at the race. With a road race, you miss most of the race -- you only get to "see" your little spot of track. With roundy-round, you can see everything. And having the headphones, let's you hear the talk between the driver and their crews. Pretty neat. Anyway, I'm guessing road racing is much better for participants, roundy-round is better for on-site spectators. It's a toss-up which is the best TV spectator sport (in other words, it's the viewer's opinion...). I mean, NASCAR puts on quite a show, and American audiences seem to demand a "show" :) .

I thought the Daytona 500 was a great NASCAR race, particularly for a restrictor plate race. Those are usually just a pack of 40+ cars going around and around for four hours and then there's a winner . This year, we had some pathetic pit performances, both by crews (Jeff Gordon needs to hire the Harlem Globetrotters for the rest of his season... they couldn't be any worse than the boneheads he had in his pits ) and by drivers (what was Biffle thinking when he came speeding into the pits?), some nice spread-out groups of cars (very unusual), and a great battle up front (Dale Jr. against everyone). Michael Waltrip's crash was horrific, but he came out unscathed... fuming at the Safety Workers (who didn't do that bad of a job)... but OK none the less.

I'm not a "Junior Fan", but it was particularly interesting to watch him try to stay in front of Stewart while Busch was doing everything he could to help Stewart... or rather screw up Earnhardt . I wish Jeff Gordon, Michael Waltrip, Bobby Labonte, or Elliott Sadler had figured out a way to win (they're "my boys" ), but it was still a great race.

i never liked nascar until 3 years ago when my buddy got me to go to the winston cup with him because his dad has a spot by the fence in the infield with his motor home. ever since that race, i havent missed any of the irl's(my favorite), nastruck, or nascar races. being out there is great especially when you are grilling and drinking beer for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Yep, similar thing here. I won some tickets to the Truck Series race -- got to go into one of the "sky boxes" . Free beer, free eats (good stuff too), got a pit pass... Anyway, it was a ton of fun. Then the next day, I went out to the IRL race and saw Kenny Brack try to fly through the retaining fence on the back stretch . Pretty scary... but the experience was a lot of fun.

Sorry guys - any sport where fans shave their favorite driver's number into their back hair is not a sport I want to be involved with. :P

BTW, I just had to share this little story from Autoweek, as it really illustrates the level of intelligence at the front of the pack in NASCAR:

"Those sons of bitches bombed Pearl Harbor, don't forget. As long as it's good for the economy, I guess it's okay. But I hope that Ford, Chevrolet, and Dodge kick their ass."
That was Dodge NASCAR driver Jimmy Spencer commenting on Toyota's entry into the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series to the San Antonio Express News. Hopefully someone has pointed out the atrocities committed in World War II by Germany to Mr. Stewart... since Germany is home to Dodge's current parent company.

God love NASCAR - land of the bigots, home of the stupid.

Yeah, the NASCAR fan base is an odd assortment. Many are "bubba's" that couldn't show you where Germany or Japan are on a map... but many are well-educated, intelligent people. Heck, the people that got me involved (besides POS Racing and onething) are both MBA's and both Directors at PepsiCo. Both are upper-middle class family people, well-dressed, well-spoken, and very knowledgeable about NASCAR racing, its rules, its teams, and its drivers. One is even a woman (NASCAR is not really known as a "chic's thing" ).

Anyway, you get plenty of bubbas, and I'm not here to defend NASCAR or try to convince anyone that it’s “good” or “bad”. I still prefer F1, GrandAm Cup, Rolex Series, CART, etc. But I do enjoy NASCAR, even though I'm still learning the intricacies of the sport...
