Thread: I'm back from Missouri!

  1. #1

    Default I'm back from Missouri!

And I come bearing gifts (for me).

I went to a large RC swap meet and picked up a few planes, bringing my current total to 13. Obviously I'm kinda interested in this stuff

For those of you who think this is going to cut into my Miata hobby, no worries. I've been doing this for about 12 years.

I may run out and put all of my planes together in the morning and take some better pics, but I'm excited about these

Do we have any more RC guys here??

And who the heck keeps messing with my profile?!

I've built and raced a couple in years past but haven't done it in a long time. I'm building a full sized one now.

Speaking of R/C... I picked up a beater control unit for $5 at First Saturday. I needs a few of the toggle switches replaced. Wanna double my money on it and take it off my hands?

there are some guys that run RC cars in the parking lot at school. theyve got a little dragstrip marked off and everything. its pretty insane to see those things light the tires up. talk about fast. i wonder what the scale speed acceleration is?

I just bought my nephew the Traxxas S-MAXX, most of the car chassis ones that are nitro based reach in excess of 60 mph in a few seconds and are 1/10 scale. So if you scale that its a pretty impressive 0-60 numbers .

I wish they had the nitro engines back when I was more in to it. The S-MAXX stadium truck has me itching to try it again.

I built a Tamiya Williams BMW F1 car, but now I'm trying to sell it so I can buy the Tamiya Miata. I've always wanted a plane, but I have too much other stuff right now going on.

I've got a Traxxas T-Maxx the sucker was awsome until I clipped my house at full speed*....

*Note to self check radio batteries regularly.

Planning to get an E-Maxx soon, figure less to mess with with an electric.

May even resurrect the T-Maxx once I figure out what all I broke.

I had several boats (gas and electric) and several different electric cars when I was in my early teens, but gave them up when I discovered girls. I tried to get back into them after marriage, getting a Hotshot .21 boat and a nitro stadium truck. I got the boat 90% finished and then had a kid. It has been sitting in the garage since then. Issues with the stadium truck got on my nerves so I gave it to TC.

I've got a couple of Nitro birds, but one isn't flyable, as I spun it on her maiden flight, and haven't put her back together yet. I should do that soon.

Yup... that's the truck that TC jumped (or at least attempted to) jump over my car!

There's a place to fly them up here in Denton that's owned by the parks and recr. dept. It should be free.

Hmm... wonder if they allow nitro planes. Some fields are going all electric but 9 of my planes are nitro. My local club field is only 5.5 miles away so I already have a place to fly (for now). We're just now getting noise complaints after YEARS of flying

So at these fields are there tons of people out there flying, or usually just a couple? I could see some carnage if there were a lot of Noobs out there flying.

When I was a kid, my dad and I would ride our bikes to a field about 2 miles from the house. It seemed like almost every time we were out there, some idiot would accidentally turn on his radio without checking the frequency poll to see if someone had a plane in they air on that frequency. You instantly knew what was happening because some mild mannered middle aged man would start yelling and screaming obscenities as his plane started barreling toward the ground.

If you were evil this would be a fun thing to do.

Unfortunately, it happens much more often now because even the national organization (AMA, Academy of Model Aeronautics) is promoting "park flyers", small electric planes that anybody can afford. Stupidly, they aren't looking at the big picture because even though a lot of people are now getting into the hobby, they don't realize that their radio signals can reach a LONG distance and screw somebody over.

Luckily, 2.4 gigahertz radios that are immune to interference are being developed and are cutting down on the problem slightly.

On another note, crashes are hilarious sometimes but they can be heartrending other times. Depends on the person/plane. I've seen (and had) plenty.

I grew up on a lake, and my dad's best friend was in to R/C sea planes. You want to talk about heart wrenching ... you crash a plane in the water and there is NOTHING salvageable. By the time you get to the crash site, the radio gear and engine as sitting on the bottom of the lake and there is nothing left but little pieces of balsa floating around.
