Reminds me of my VW bus... your knees end up supplementing the front bumper in crash protection.
It's not clear to me that the Smart performed that badly. Would a Miata (or a Civic) perform any better? Would the doors still open?

I would say the Miata would fair much better, seeing the results of my Mom's car crash. Her frame was tweeked, but the car did'nt look that bad. The collision into the concrete barier caused the barier to be knocked over. She walked away with a coulple of broken ribs(osteo perosis) and bruses after a van pulled out in front of her. She swerved to miss, but somethink in the steering felt as if it broke and ended sending her into the wall at 55mph.
